I’m going to miss this!!!! The clean up has begun, an hour here & there pulling, cutting, resisting the urge to save more seeds. The netting removal is an absolute joy! Haha! This year we need to remove the landscape fabric to replace the old septic field that lies beneath the garden. Like you really wanted to know this. Just keeping it real here y’all. It’s going to get messy but so happy we have a compost pile ready to cover the entire space once it’s done.

Sun filled fall days make me happy. The slightest touch of frost Thursday evening showed up on half the plants. Struggling between potato harvest and getting things done with the seed saving, dahlia digging and garden removal will be interesting this year, but we will make it all happen. It might not be pretty, but it will be done.

Thought I’d save every last bit of celosia to dry, I mean look at these colours and forms! The fluffiest fluffers ever in the pastel colours are so stinkin cute! Then the pale crested ones are another favourite, put them all together and I’m so excited for dried flowers now!

The rain stoped potato harvest for now, so this happened. The flowers are fading but I love spending time finding some beauties in the midst of it all. No arranging needed to make flowers look good! I managed to stuff a bucket completely full and could probably fill a few more but my house needs some serious attention. lol

Seed collecting began a couple of weeks ago but I’ve left a few blooms of my favourites to pollinate & mature even more in hopes of getting more viable seed. These guys are second generation from one plant I saved seed from last fall and only three of dozens of plants have the traits I’m focussing on. I have big hopes for these! Are you a seed saver?

Choosing more zinnias for seed saving. Classic favourite, very full large bloom in a pretty colour and a fun petal form in a buttery tone. What do you think of these ones?

Last summer I saved a lot of zinnia seed but one specific zinnia plant from Dawn Creek Farm • Kori & Toby produced the prettiest peach tufted double bloom. I saved as many seeds as I could and planted them in an isolated area away from the rest of the zinnias. I did choose to intersperse some lilac zinderella zinnias to increase the genetics of the tufted center and colour. I found a few plants that resemble the parent plant so here we are collecting, categorizing and drying seed heads in hopes of discovering some beautiful cross pollination. I’m here for the results.
