I have received notice that the Province has approved Hudbay Minerals’ mine expansion project in Princeton — an announcement that carries deep meaning for me personally and for our entire community.

Having grown up in Princeton, I understand just how important this project is. When I was in high school, the copper mine closed, and it was a devastating time for the community. Many families lost everything. I remember people talking about leaving their keys on the table and walking away from homes they could no longer afford. Those were hard years that shaped Princeton in lasting ways.

As I travel around the province today, I often run into people from Princeton working in other mining towns. They uprooted their families and moved wherever they could find work to support their families. That story is not unique to Princeton — it is the story of many resource communities across British Columbia.

Princeton worked hard to reinvent itself. The community built a strong tourism economy and became a welcoming place to retire. When the mine reopened, it reinvigorated the town — bringing young working families and skilled professionals back to the community. The social fabric of Princeton grew stronger with that new energy and opportunity.

I know many families have hesitated to put down permanent roots while waiting for certainty about the future of the mine. This expansion approval provides that certainty, and I hope it will give families the confidence to invest in Princeton as their long-term home.

Over the past year, I have worked closely with Hudbay Minerals, the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, local governments, and community members to understand the project and support a path forward. I have consistently advocated for a decision that recognizes both the economic importance of this mine and the need to protect the land and water that sustain the Similkameen Valley.

I am grateful for the collaborative approach taken by Hudbay to create a plan that supports prosperity while respecting the environment and the water that are the lifeblood of the Similkameen Valley.

This approval represents stability and opportunity — not just for Princeton, but for the entire Boundary–Similkameen region.

As always, I remain open and available to hear from residents as this project moves forward.
