🏡💦Spring Melt Awareness — Protect Your Home💦🏡

As temperatures rise and the snow begins to melt, now is the time to pay close attention to how water is moving around your home. Spring thaw can quickly create problems if water isn’t managed properly.

✔️ Check that your eavestroughs and downspouts are clear and directing water away from your foundation

✔️ Watch for water pooling around your house — standing water is often an early warning sign

✔️ Make sure you have a solid water management plan in place

✔️ Keep a close eye on areas where water could enter your home

✔️ Move built-up ice away from your foundation and sidewalks to help prevent water intrusion and improve safety for pedestrians

It’s been a crazy winter, and with more people out walking, taking the time to remove ice from your sidewalks helps keep everyone safe while also protecting your home.

Spring can be a stressful time for homeowners, but staying aware and proactive now can help prevent bigger issues later. A little attention during spring melt goes a long way toward keeping your home safe and dry

Whether you’re a real estate agent, a buyer, or a seller, a little preparation can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth home inspection. A well-prepared home helps inspectors do their job efficiently and gives buyers peace of mind. Here’s a handy checklist to help you get ready:

• Make sure attic access is accessible - Inspectors need to check insulation, ventilation, and structure.

• Tidy up - A clean and organized space allows for a more efficient inspection.

• Keep windows clear - Move any furniture blocking windows so they can be properly checked.

• Clean up the backyard - Ensure pet waste is removed to allow access to the exterior.

• Empty appliances - No laundry in the washer or dryer so they can be inspected.

• Make sure the dishwasher is empty - It will be checked for proper function and leaks.

• Ensure the stove and oven are empty - Inspectors need to test them safely.

• Ensure water is turned on - This allows the inspector to check plumbing and fixtures.

• Light pilot lights - Fireplaces and furnaces should be ready for testing.

• Clear space under bathroom and kitchen sinks - Plumbing needs to be accessible for inspection.

• Ensure all electrical outlets have easy access - Inspectors need to check for proper function and safety.

• Make sure the furnace and hot water tank as well as the electrical panel are easily accessible - Inspectors need to check for proper operation and maintenance.

A checklist like this is helpful for everyone involved in a home sale. It not only makes the inspection process smoother but also helps buyers feel more confident about the property. If you have any questions, DJ’s Home Inspections is here to help!

As the snow melts, it’s time to think about spring lawn maintenance and protecting your home from water damage.

✅ Tackle Snow Mold – Those patchy, matted areas on your lawn can suffocate new growth. Raking gently helps improve air circulation and promotes a healthy green lawn.

✅ Check Your Grading – Ensure your landscaping slopes away from your home to prevent water from pooling near your foundation. Poor grading can lead to basement leaks and costly repairs.

✅ Start Spring Lawn Care – Aeration, dethatching, and early-season fertilizing will give your grass a strong start and help it recover from winter stress.

A little maintenance now can save you big headaches later!

Spring is Almost Here! Is Your Home Ready?

With the snow melting and spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to check on a few key areas of your home to prevent issues before they start!

✅ Check Your Gutters & Downspouts – Make sure they’re clear of debris and properly directing water away from your foundation.

✅ Inspect Your Roof – Ice and snow can take a toll. Look for missing shingles, leaks, or any signs of winter damage.

✅ Test Your Sump Pump – With all that melting snow, ensure your sump pump is in good working order to prevent basement flooding.

✅ Examine Your Foundation – Walk around your home and check for cracks or signs of shifting. Small cracks can turn into big problems if left unchecked!

✅ Check Outdoor Faucets & Hoses – Turn your outside taps back on and look for leaks that may have developed over the winter.

A little maintenance now can save you from costly repairs down the road!
Stay ahead of spring surprises! 🌷🚧
