Today marks two months since Eddie’s leukemia diagnosis.

Yesterday our system failed us. Traumatic.

After an already very hard day at ACH we were able to head home around 5:30. Upon arrival Eddie appeared to be in amazing spirits despite his coming & going rash that we have been testing to determine whether it’s a reaction to a new drug or antibiotics OR viral infection. The reality is we still don’t know and understand how hard these answers are to come by.

The issue is that upon being home in Red Deer he spiked a fever, we called ACH oncology team and they told us they wanted us to go to RD because it was closer. We didn’t want to go that route but listened.

I want to preface that almost every interaction we had with medical staff yesterday was pleasant however professionals were put in a position to do things they simply weren’t trained for.

Eddie has a port under his skin that is accessed weekly in Calgary. Upon arrival to RD we knew it wasn’t as common here, asked our doctor to CONFIRM the nurse was confident in doing the port access.

Fail. Port access was a huge fail. Which this wouldn’t be as concerning if he hadn’t been accessed already twice that day. The more pokes = the better possibility of an infection.

We were brought up to Pediatrics at approximately 2:30 (our arrival to hospital was 11:30). We voiced our concerns again and how the sterile process prior to the poke didn’t seem as extensive as in Calgary.

Here comes round 2 by a new team. Failed. Imagine being 3.5 and all these pokes in your chest. Issues with “scar tissue” came up… how? He had been accessed twice that day. It seems like we all struggle to just say “no I’m not comfortable”. But the reality is there were only 3 staff members working that evening and one of them “needed” to perform something they don’t do very often.

This wasn’t the end. We proceeded to make THREE attempts at an IV as Nick and I were NO longer comfortable trying for a port access. One nurse did check arms and said she was not comfortable to try.. we appreciated that.

Again, I completely understand that IV’s can be tricky. No problem there. It’s that now it’s 4:45 am. None of us have slept & Eddie has no antibiotics. After the last IV try we said we are done. There is no way all these pokes and distress to Eddie is more beneficial than just waiting for more staff or a transfer to Calgary as we had requested.

Our RT, doctor, staff were incredibly kind and understanding of our situation it wasn’t that. It was that a hospital that does not have the staff to support Eddie’s specific needs were left with responsibilities they could not handle.

Two different times I had to walk away. Couldn’t breathe from the amount of tears I had running down my face. Nick raising his voice seeing his baby so exhausted and distressed.

Yesterday Eddie was failed by our system. At 5:45 AM Eddie went to sleep after finally getting the antibiotics via needle to his legs. No nap yesterday due to the commotion in Calgary after his chemo.

I keep reminding myself it’s one day at a time. However things NEED to change. We should not be left scared for the next time Eddie spikes a fever in Red Deer (and he will) during his leukemia treatment. Yet, we are terrified.

Today a nurse in Red Deer came in asking for permission to try round 3 to get his port in. Nick granted access in the event she was confident to do it. She said she was. And she did it.

She also voiced to Nick she had no problem finding it. All we needed this whole time was someone confident in it, who had recently been practicing this with other patients, past patients etc.

The issue is we have no way to confirm that next time someone “confident” will be beside us. I’m just distraught.

I believe nurses, RT’s, doctors are the closest thing to real life superheroes and I know each one of them we met yesterday was good at their job that’s not it. It’s the lack of constant education for these “one offs”.

Yes, we will be voicing our concerns. Yes, we won’t stop advocating.

Eddie was in great spirits today as he was transferred via ambulance back to Children’s. Our superhero. Tonight we will all hopefully sleep well.
