Update on Red Lake Forest Fires - July 26, 2021

The large fires in our area, specifically Kenora 051 to the Southwest, Red Lake Fire 077 to the West and Red Lake Fire 016 to the North continue to have an impact on our communities. I want to assure you that these fires today do not pose an immediate threat, however, we must remain diligent and prepared in the event the weather conditions change in such a manner that an evacuation must be called.

The Municipality keeps in close dialogue with the MNRF and other community partners. We actively seek and receive all pertinent information relating to our forest fire conditions. Please be advised moving forward unless something significant occurs, we will not be using the current alert system. We will be utilizing other means to communicate updates to our residents. Examples: Facebook, Municipal Website, Newsletter and Radio. Again, we will only use the alert system if there is significant advancement of the fires towards our communities.

Take care and stay safe!
Mayor Fred Mota

Red Lake Fire Update

We are cautiously optimistic the weather this afternoon and evening will produce some relief to our continued forest fire challenges in the Red Lake District. Yesterday alone, there were twenty-six (26) new starts in our Region. None of the new starts are located within our Municipality, and all new starts from yesterday and the day before, do not pose a risk to our communities.

Red Lake Fire 077 to the West has shown no growth along the easterly portion of the fire; Red Lake Fire 016 to the North has increased in size however MNRF ignition teams are strategically creating break zones that will assist in slowing down the fires spread; Kenora fire 051 located Southwest of Red Lake is showing minimal growth towards the Northeast. Fire crews are working diligently around Sydney Lake and are creating break zones and tying in natural boundaries (lakes and rivers).

We must be mindful as our conditions remain very dry. Please remain diligent and prepared if an evacuation is necessary.

Stay informed with our Municipal updates and if daily conditions change and/or worsen, the Municipality will provide further information outside of our daily 3pm updates.

Take care and stay safe!

Forest Fire Update

MNRF Fire crews remain busy addressing the new forest fire start ups in our Region. On Monday, July 19th there were fourteen (14) new starts and as of this afternoon today, there is five (5) additional new starts. MNRF have dedicated multiple crews and air support to contain and control these fires to ensure we do not have another large fire that threatens our communities. The new starts are a result of the recent weather event that produced several lightening strikes throughout our region. The new starts are a priority for the MNRF.

The weather and wind conditions today and for the next two (2) days appear to be favourable, however, we must remain mindful that things could change relatively quickly. As communicated yesterday, an evacuation today is not of immediate concern, but again, we must remain on high alert until we receive a weather event that produces significant precipitation.

Stay informed with our Municipal updates and if daily conditions change and/or worsen, the Municipality will provide further information outside of our daily 3pm updates.

Take care and stay safe!

Update on Red Lake Forest Fires

There are three significant fires in our area, those being Kenora 051 to the Southwest, Red Lake Fire 077 to our immediate West and Red Lake Fire 016 to the North. Although these fires do not pose an immediate threat to our community TODAY, we must be mindful and cautious as things could change in SHORT NOTICE.

The Municipality twice daily receives MNRF fire updates, including fire projections and weather forecasts. We also have emergency control group meetings daily with all pertinent community partners. We remain informed and have full confidence in the expertise and efforts of the MNRF. It is important that we all remain prepared if an evacuation is called as the probability of an evacuation continues to be likely until such time, we receive a weather event that produces significant rain fall.

Stay informed with our Municipal updates and if daily conditions change and/or worsen, the Municipality will provide further information outside of our daily 3pm updates.

Take care and stay safe!

UPDATE on Red Lake Fire 077 and Red Lake Fire 016

Please be advised the Municipality continues to work closely with the MNRF and our community partners through our control groups.

Currently, Red Lake Fire 077 remains approximately 20km west of the communities of Madsen and Starratt-Olsen. The winds today changed from the Southwest and are now blowing directly out of the West gusting up to 20km/hr. The fire remains with very dry conditions and is now approximately 19,000 hectares and not under control. Fire 077 remains a concern for our community.

To the North of Red Lake Fire 077, Red Lake Fire 016 joined Red Lake Fire 067. This fire behavior may also pose a threat to our community and remains approximately 10km to the North away from Red Lake Fire 077. The size of this fire is approximately 120,000 hectares. There is a very real chance these fires will join together with Red Lake Fire 077. It is estimated that once these fires combine, the fire may be well over 150,000 hectares in size.

I would also like to remind our community that further fire protection services have begun. You may see sprinklers and equipment throughout various areas of Red Lake and the Madsen area. Once again, this is a proactive approach and is designed to add an additional layer of protection to our immediate community’s needs and infrastructural needs.

There is no rain in our immediate forecast. Our dry conditions remain extreme. The probability of an evacuation still remains likely in our near future. Please stay informed with our Municipal updates. If daily conditions change and/or worsen, the Municipality will provide further information outside of our daily 3pm updates.

Take care and stay safe!

Mayor Fred Mota
