What happens when a community comes together with shovels, seedlings, and a shared vision? Something pretty incredible. This past weekend, hundreds of volunteers gathered in Cathedral’s Les Sherman Park to plant trees as part of the Cathedral Village Forest Project, a long-term initiative with an ambitious goal: planting one tree for every resident in the neighbourhood. The project will transform 1.7 hectares along Wascana Creek into a thriving urban forest filled with trees, shrubs, wildlife habitat, and natural spaces for recreation and exploration.
What makes this story so special isn’t just the trees, it’s the people behind them. Cathedral has long been known as one of Regina’s most tight-knit and community-minded neighbourhoods, and this project is a perfect example of neighbours working together to create something that will benefit generations to come. Volunteers of all ages showed up to dig, plant, connect, and invest in the future of their community.
Projects like this do far more than beautify a neighbourhood. Research consistently shows that mature trees and green spaces can increase property values, improve air quality, reduce urban heat, support wildlife, encourage outdoor activity, and contribute to better mental health and overall quality of life.
