Native to the mountains of Japan, these two mature trees were carefully protected throughout construction and remain a defining landmark of the Aviary community.

Look closely: the foliage grows in flat, feathery sprays. Turn a branch over and you’ll find distinctive white, butterfly-like markings on the undersides, one of the easiest ways to identify a Sawara cypress. Its small, round cones are about the size of a pea, giving the species its name, pisifera, meaning “pea-bearing.”
