The Bank of Canada announced this morning that it is holding its policy rate at 2.25%, marking another pause as policymakers continue to navigate a complicated global economic environment.

The Bank decided to leave rates unchanged as it balances two competing forces:

🔑Canada's economy remains soft, with GDP slipping slightly in the first quarter and housing activity slowing.

🔑Inflation has ticked higher, reaching 2.8% in April, largely due to rising energy prices linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Bank made it clear that while higher gas and energy costs are pushing inflation up temporarily, they do not want those increases spreading throughout the broader economy.

For buyers, today's announcement provides something that's been in short supply lately: stability.

Variable-rate borrowers won't see immediate changes to their payments, and lenders continue to price mortgages in an environment where future rate expectations remain relatively steady.

For sellers, lower borrowing costs compared to a year ago continue to support demand, but buyers are still facing affordability challenges and remain cautious.
