WE HAVE AN EPIDEMIC. Cats and kittens are being dumped, surrendered and abandoned at an all-time alarming rate. What can we do? We can't. People who genuinely care about their pets get them spayed or neutered. If they haven't got the money - they save until they have.

People who couldn't care less and are totally irresponsible will not pay to have their pets fixed. They will, instead, dump them in a ditch or call a rescue to take on their responsibility. I had a call this week from a woman wanting us to take 4 kittens but was not willing to fix the mother cat she was keeping. She did not want to spend money. These are the people in our society that are the cause of this out-of-control cat population. They have money for themselves and what they want but none for their pets.

All the rescues are full; all the shelters are full; all the foster homes are full. If you want to help and be a part of contributing please, please do something. Donate, foster, volunteer -- every little bit and big bit helps. We cannot change society -- we can however make a difference in the lives of the lucky animals that are saved.

Kittens, kittens and more kittens....the calls to take them never end....every rescue and shelter is overflowing -- yet somehow, most of us try to find a little room and a little more money so we can take them when no one else wants to. The two little ones - about 6 weeks old - were, apparently, found on a road a couple of weeks ago and were kept until today when the people no longer wanted them. Hmmmmm.......I'm thinking because they both smell like a barn and were found "in the country" that these are in fact their kittens which were no longer wanted and the story about "roadside abandonment" is more of a tearjerker than "we just don't want these kittens" - let someone else take care of them. And apparently the family called The Edmonton Humane Society but were told the EHS could not take them so we got the call.

I'm glad we did - because they are two very cute, very adorable kittens - a little orange one and a little white one with blue eyes. They will be showered with love; will have a warm home and lots of food. When they are old enough and big enough they will be up for adoption as a pair.

I have asked these questions so many times - why aren't people spaying or neutering their cats? Why are cats so disposable? Why are we so selfish? I have no answers. The human race is......well don't get me going...I can't print what I think!

Another beautiful day in one of the best places to live on earth ...a little cloudy due to smoke but nevertheless we are blessed to live here in Alberta and Canada. We also need to think and feel for the families and the many animals running for their lives in northern Alberta because of the fires. Our hearts and our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Yesterday we got a call from a friend who cares deeply about animals -- and in the past we have taken in the ones she and her family have rescued. Mavis called us yesterday that a friend of hers who works in a camp in High Level had come across five 4-5 week old puppies - they had no mom. Her friend carefully gathered up the puppies and called Mavis for help. Mavis called us. We called our friends at Sundance Animal Rescue to see if they had foster families and room to take in these five little orphans. There was no hesitation and last night, close to midnight, Jan drove from St. Albert to Spruce Grove to meet Mavis and her friend who brought the puppies from High Level, after a long, long tiring drive.

Jan kept the pups overnight and today they were placed in a foster home. None of this would have happened without a team of selfless compassionate animal advocates. We thank everyone who made the rescue happen.

It's National Adoption Weekend so we are inviting you to come and visit us at Petsmart today and tomorrow from 1-4 p.m. We were there yesterday from 4 to 8 p.m. and shortly after arriving, setting up and visiting with staff and customers we got a call from Mavis at the Grove Motor Inn. Two very tiny 2 week old kittens were found at the back of the building -- without a mom. The staff immediately took them in, bought kitten food at one of the pet stores and called us. And to help with their care, some of the staff and customers donated money to care for our newest rescues. If only people would spay or neuter...situations like this wouldn't happen. Please spay or neuter your pets. It is the most kind and responsible thing you can do for them and remember to ADOPT don't SHOP.

We would also like to thank Homes Alive Pets that donated a substantial amount of pet food this week-- all of which went into northern Alberta and BC and distributed to families and many communities in remote areas.

As always, there are so many people that help us there are never enough "thank you's".

This coming weekend is our first fundraiser of the year. We will be at Aspen Grove Nursery, Spruce Grove from 11 to 3 or so (depending on the huge crowds bound to show up in this spectacular weather to buy bedding plants) and of course to visit the beautiful property that not only looks like a western town, but caters to us garden loving people and animal crazy people ...as this is also a farm rescue with many animals living the good life. We will be there Saturday and Sunday and each weekend thereafter until the plants are sold and the hot dogs and home-made hamburgers are depleted. Please come out and visit us - buy a hot dog or hamburger and support our rescue of many cats and kittens.

Here's the policies of our charity - Half Way Home Rescue.

Each cat and kitten that we take in is given a medical examination and treated if necessary. Each one is vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Kittens remain with their mother until they reach the 10-week mark. All of our animals are in foster homes until adopted. To adopt, we require an application which is assessed by our Board and then a homecheck is done. We also have partnered with Petsmart in Spruce Grove and each Saturday we are there from 12-4 with some of our cats or kittens. Tomorrow we will showcase Milo (a 7 month old kitten) and Spencer (a 10 month old young adult). Adult cats 1 year+ are $50.00 and kittens are $75.00.

Here is Spencer and Milo.

Welcome to Half Way Home Rescue...we hope to showcase our many cats and kittens that are in our care; and those of other rescues too. We want to keep this page as positive as possible - to highlight the beauty of our animals; the dedication of foster families and the incredible support from our volunteers and especially the many stores and pet food suppliers that help us to look after so many unwanted, abused, abandoned and neglected animals as well as those that are surrendered to us. To everyone and our Facebook Friends.... we will start this new page by saying THANK YOU.

Our first story is about a lady who called to surrender her kittens because she thought the mother cat had been killed, We took 2, and a third one was at the Parkland Animal Shelter. A day later we got a call that the mother cat had not been killed but in fact she came home, a little battered but in good health. Now she had no kittens ....and they were crying for their mom. .After a few conversations and a couple of text messages the lady who owned the mother cat and handed her over to us to care for the 3 kittens. Our promise to this lady is to allow her to look after her little ones; and then when they are weened Mom Cat will be spayed, vaccinated, and micro chipped by Half Way Home Rescue as a thank you for her allowing her good conscience to rule her heart.
