The Palatine Building is a beautifully restored 4 storey stone building of the Second Empire. It has two elaborate entrances at each side of its main façade with large arched windows that give the building an impressive street presence. Built in 1878, it is situated on 122-124 Prince William Street in the Trinity Royal Preservation Area of the City of Saint John. The Palatine Building is designate
d as Historic Place for its architecture, its place within the uptown Saint John streetscape and for its association with businesses that occupied the premises. The Palatine Building is one of a collection of commercial and residential, Italianate and Second Empire buildings that were built between 1877 and 1881 after two thirds of the City of Saint John was destroyed by the fire in 1877. This building is a good example of Second Empire commercial architecture from this period of rebuilding in Saint John. The carved gargoyles were done by James McAvity and are the inspiration for the Palatine Logo. The architects of this grand building at the time were Dumaresque and Dewar, of Halifax. In 2013 work was begun on the Palatine to revitalize the building. After a year of work the building now has all modern amenities one would expect. Defining character elements have been kept, such as exposed and viewable workings of the original bank doors, which can be seen as you enter the soaring lobby.
