Background
Mrs. Minnie Hunter, born and raised in Salvage, raised her 5 children in this little Salt Box in latter latter part of the 1800's. It struck my wife and I as a little proud house, perched on the oceans edge in the harbour of Salvage with a view as beautiful as anywhere in North America. From a boaters perspective Salvage is strategically located in Bonavista Bay as it sits in the apex of the bay. Same distance from Bonavista as it is to Cape Freels. The Harbour and wharf, which site immediately in front of the house, can easily handle boats from 16 feet to 65. All looked after by the Harbour Authority of Salvage. So whether you are a boater or someone who loves the vibe of a working Harbour, Salvage might be for you. Unfortunately the house had fallen into disrepair and needed substantial work. We started on our restoration project over a year ago with the aim that it would take as long as it took. We used local craftsmen who have built salt boxes all their lives. Highlights
