I don’t know about you, but we really didn’t get to enjoy our yard and deck last year due to the mosquitoes. It felt like every time we stepped outside, we were the main course! 🍽️🦟

I’m really looking forward to spending more time outdoors this season, but I’m not a big fan of using heavy chemicals to keep the bugs away. So, I’ve been doing some research, and this year I am planting a "defense garden" designed to naturally repel mosquitoes and other pests. 🌿✨

Here is the game plan for the yard and the deck:

In the Gardens:

- Marigolds: I’m lining the flower beds with these. They contain pyrethrum, which bugs absolutely hate, but they look cheerful and bright! 🌼

- Catnip: Believe it or not, it’s actually found to be more effective than some chemical sprays (though the neighborhood cats might become frequent visitors!). 🐈‍⬛ However, since Catnip is a hardy perennial in our zone, it will come back every year—and it spreads! If you don’t want it taking over the whole garden, keep it in a large container or a dedicated "wild" corner.

- Lavender: I'm planting this in the sunnier spots. It smells amazing to us but is a total turn-off for flies and mosquitoes. 💜

In Pots & Planters (Right on the deck and patio):

- Citronella Geraniums: These are going in big pots right next to the seating area. They have a great lemony scent that creates a "no-fly zone." 🍋

- Lemon Grass: A beautiful ornamental grass for pots that packs a punch against pests.

- Fresh Herbs (Basil & Rosemary): These are pull-double duty! They keep the bugs away from the patio table, and I can grab a few sprigs for dinner while I’m at it. 🍕🌿

I’m hoping this natural approach lets us actually finish a conversation outside without the constant swatting!
