Do you ever wonder what's happening in Saskatoon's housing market as we've seen a spike in interest rates and keep hearing about slowdowns in major cities to the east and west?

We are in an active Seller's market. Saskatoon's housing inventory is low (number of houses on the market), this means that when a property hits the market, it usually doesn't last long. This is good news for sellers but creates a more competitive market for buyers.

It's another edition of this or that! Some of us, including myself think every flat surface is an opportunity for a 3 dimensional collage. This is not always the case, especially when having photos taken to list your house. Remember: LESS IS MORE. You are setting a room up for a presentation, a persception. This may mean tucking some items away for awhile. You might also discover you like the feeling it creates!

IT'S PICTURE DAY! You're ready to put your house on the market. You've tidied up, put away the clutter and those personal photos. Now it's time for those finishing touches.

Take a few extra minutes to add some layers to a bed or add a couple pillows on the couch. By doing this you take a space from being clean and livable to warm and inviting.

Let's face it, some of our appliances today don't stack up to some of those trusty appliances made a few decades ago.

Our first microwave was a hand-me-down from my grandpa. It was the first microwave he had purchased in the 70's. 30 years later it still worked and did its job well!

5 years ago we moved into our house, purchased new appliances and the "beautiful" mustard yellow fridge found a new home in the basement as the over-flow fridge. It's still ticking along!! Sadly we are having problems with the new fridge.

What am I getting at? Most homes in Saskatchewan include the appliances with the purchase, so when out house shopping you'll have to keep in mind the age of the appliances in a potential home. You could be looking at needing to replace 1 or more in the next year or two.

When shopping for new appliances, research brands (something I wish I would have done), consider looking at the high-end brands. If you can afford these high-end brands you will see a return in the long run.

Here are some averages on appliance longevity:
Fridge - 13 years
Stove - 13 years (electric)
- 15 (gas)
Dishwasher - 9 years
Washer - 10 years
Dryer - 10 years

You look around what used to be your favourite room in your house and it feels tired. You don't have a big budget but you want to fall in love with the room again? Here are some ideas to make the space your happy place once again.

Hit the Thrift Store
Donate items you don't love anymore (to avoid cluttering your home). While you're at the thrift store dropping the items off, take a walk around and see if there is anything that catches your eye that you could incorporate into your decore.

Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace
Take some time and scroll through platforms like Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace to see if you can find some gems to add to your space. While you're at it, sell items that have lost their luster in your space.

"Things" Swap
We've all heard of a clothing swap, instead of clothes, swap things. Invite friends over (with their box of unwanted items) for an evening of food, conversation and shopping for new items (to you) to fill your house. Any unclaimed items can be donated to your local thrift store.

Weeding and a good prairie sky, both food for the soul.

A big sign I've turned into my mother...I find joy in weeding🤣. Our section of the garden was a mess (I should really learn to take before pics) from a little neglect🙈. With a little time and some persistance we pulled bags and bags of portulaca. And oh is it satisfying!

Why declutter? You want to MAXIMIZE the perceived space in your home.

Clear out non essentials. If you don't feel like going through stuff or don't have the time, put things away where buys won't be looking. Rent a storage space if you have to.

Lots of people don't have 'the vision.' Help them see themselves in the space.
