NASA's PACE satellite captured spectacular imagery of the Black Sea showing enormous turquoise-colored areas caused by a massive phytoplankton bloom. These microscopic marine organisms contain pigments that can dramatically change the color of seawater when their concentrations become extremely high.

Phytoplankton are responsible for producing roughly half of Earth's oxygen through photosynthesis, making them fundamental to the global carbon cycle and marine food chain. However, unusually large blooms can also consume oxygen when they decay, potentially creating dead zones that threaten fish and other marine organisms.

NASA's PACE mission uses advanced ocean-color instruments to monitor these biological changes across the world's oceans from orbit.

Wild animals are getting closer to us because we have left them nowhere else to go 🌍🐾

Researchers estimate that nearly all of Earth's land has been reshaped in some way by towns, farms, and roads, and as forests fall and wetlands shrink, wild spaces continue to disappear. Animals do not simply vanish along with their habitat though, since many adapt by moving closer to people in search of the food, water, and safety their natural environment no longer provides. When a bear steps into a backyard or a coyote walks down a quiet street, ecologists say it is rarely mischief but survival, with fruit trees and open garbage bins becoming lifelines for creatures running out of options. Sharing space with wildlife responsibly means securing waste, protecting green areas, and planting native trees wherever possible. Every species plays a role in keeping ecosystems balanced, and that balance depends on giving wild animals room to remain wild.
