Germany is turning an everyday piece of architecture into a potential electricity generator. Solar awnings combine photovoltaic material with retractable shading, allowing the same installation to provide both sun protection and electricity generation.

The larger system developed by German startup SolarMarkise is rated at up to 1.8 kW, while a smaller version is rated at approximately 1.35 kW.

The concept is particularly interesting for buildings where conventional rooftop solar is difficult because of limited roof space, unsuitable orientation, heritage restrictions or structural limitations.

Solar awnings could potentially be installed over balconies, patios, terraces, windows and commercial outdoor areas, turning previously unused surfaces into distributed generation.

The idea reflects a broader trend in solar technology: instead of asking where we can put another conventional panel, engineers are increasingly asking which everyday surfaces can become solar generators?
