PLEASE TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND READ THIS TO AVOID WATER IN YOUR BASEMENT DURING RAINY DAYS:

A quick and safe way to test a sump pump is to simulate a rising water level:

1. Make sure the pump has power
* Verify it’s plugged in.
* Check that the outlet, breaker, or GFCI hasn’t tripped.
2. Pour water into the sump pit
* Use a bucket and slowly add water until the float switch rises.
* The pump should automatically turn on when the float reaches its activation point.
3. Watch what happens
* The pump should start promptly.
* Water should be discharged through the discharge pipe.
* The water level should drop, and the pump should shut off automatically when the float lowers.
4. Check the discharge
* If possible, go outside and confirm water is actually coming out of the discharge line.

If the pump doesn’t run

* Check for power.
* Make sure the float isn’t stuck against the pit wall or debris.
* For pumps with a piggyback plug (pump plug connected to float switch plug), unplug the pump from the float switch and plug it directly into the outlet. If it runs, the float switch may be faulty.

If the pump runs but doesn’t remove water

* The impeller may be clogged.
* The discharge pipe may be blocked or frozen.
* The check valve may be installed incorrectly or have failed.

How often to test

It’s a good idea to test your sump pump every 3–4 months, and especially before rainy seasons or snowmelt periods.

Strong detached price growth contrasts with softening condo market in May
Edmonton, AB - June 2, 2026 — The Greater Edmonton Area (GEA) real estate market reported 2,557 sales in May 2026, increasing 3.2% in comparison to activity in April 2026 and decreasing 13.4% compared to May 2025. There were 4,855 new listings - a month-over-month increase of 21.7% and a year-over-year increase of 2.7%. Inventory levels rose 13.4% from the previous month and are 23.9% higher than May 2025.
Average selling price across all residential property types increased by 2.7% from the previous month to $491,794, a price 6.3% higher than May 2025. The MLS® Home Price Index (HPI) composite benchmark price in the GEA was $432,200, increasing 0.1% from April 2026 and decreasing 1.8% year-over-year.
