Bank of Canada maintains the policy rate at 2¼%

The Bank of Canada today held its target for the overnight rate at 2.25%, with the Bank Rate at 2.5% and the deposit rate at 2.20%.

The conflict in the Middle East is now in its fourth month. The resulting increases in energy prices and disruptions in global supply chains are weighing on global economic growth and pushing up inflation. At the same time, the US administration continues to propose new tariffs and trade policy uncertainty remains elevated.

In the United States, economic growth remains solid, supported by consumption and AI‑related investment. In the euro area, growth is subdued, with higher energy prices weighing on activity. China’s economic growth continues to be supported by strong exports.

Canadian financial conditions have loosened since the April Monetary Policy Report. Global equity markets have been buoyant and bond yields remain volatile. The Canadian dollar has weakened against the US dollar and other currencies.

In Canada, GDP edged down by 0.1% in the first quarter, weaker than expected at the time of the April MPR. Consumer spending grew 1.4% but government spending unexpectedly declined. Housing activity also declined and business investment remained weak. Exports fell while imports rose strongly as inventories were rebuilt. Employment was up in May, but looking through monthly volatility, employment in Canada is little changed since the start of the year. The unemployment rate continues to fluctuate in the 6 ½%-7% range with the most recent reading at 6.6% in May.

Recent data suggests that growth will resume in the second quarter but, even with some rebound, the economy is expected to remain in excess supply.

As expected, CPI inflation rose in April, reaching 2.8%. The increase reflects energy prices, both higher oil prices and the impact of the elimination of the consumer carbon tax falling out of the 12-month rate of inflation. So far, there has been limited evidence of broad-based pass-through of higher energy prices to other consumer prices. Measures of core inflation have moved down to around 2% and the share of CPI components growing above 3% is close to its historical average. Food price inflation moderated but remains high, and shelter inflation continued to slow. With global oil prices still elevated—roughly $10 a barrel above our April MPR assumptions—total inflation is expected to hover around 3% in the near term before easing gradually towards 2%.

Against this overall backdrop, Governing Council decided to maintain the policy rate at 2.25%. Economic activity in Canada has been weak and uncertainty about US trade policy persists. The conflict in the Middle East is ongoing and oil prices remain elevated. Governing Council is continuing to look through the war’s near-term impact on headline inflation, but will not let higher energy prices become persistent inflation. As the outlook evolves, we stand ready to respond as needed. The Bank is committed to maintaining Canadians’ confidence in price stability through this period of global upheaval.

Lalande Conservation Park in Orleans !

City advances wildlife response efforts at Lalande Conservation Park
The City has increased safety measures and has temporarily closed Lalande Conservation Park effective Tuesday, June 9, following a reported incident involving coyotes in the area. The closure will allow the City to advance its response efforts in coordination with provincial authorities, wildlife experts and partner agencies.

Protecting public safety remains the City's priority as it responds to a complex situation in a residential area where people, pets and wildlife are in close proximity.

The City has mobilized resources and implemented enhanced safety measures in response to the escalating situation to reduce the risk of further encounters. Under Ontario’s wildlife regulatory framework, municipalities must follow specific requirements related to wildlife management and we work collaboratively with the Province on response options, particularly in unique or escalated circumstances.

Relocation options were reviewed earlier in the response within the existing regulatory framework. Given the recent escalation of the situation and increased public safety concerns, the City is furthering discussions with the Ministry to determine whether additional measures, including potential regulatory exemptions to allow for relocation, may be permitted.

At the same time, the City is actively preparing for all potential outcomes available under provincial regulations. Staff, wildlife specialists and partner agencies are coordinating operational plans now so that appropriate action can be taken without delay should relocation not be approved.

As part of the City's interim response:

Lalande Conservation Park will remain closed until operations are complete.

Trail cameras will be installed to support operations and provide situational awareness in the area.

By-law and Regulatory Services staff are on site advising residents to avoid the park and surrounding greenspace while the closure is in effect.

City staff will continue coordinating directly with provincial authorities and wildlife experts.

For the safety of both wildlife and residents, the public is reminded not to attempt to shoot, trap or approach coyotes. Such activities are prohibited and may result in enforcement action under applicable regulations.

The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents as it continues to navigate this complex situation and will advise when the park is reopened.

Public safety reminders for residents

While coyotes are usually wary of humans, it’s important to remain vigilant.

If you notice any concerning coyote behaviour, you can report it by calling 3-1-1 or filling out the online form: Report a sighting of a coyote · City of Ottawa. If a coyote is an immediate threat, call 9-1-1. If you spot a coyote nearby, or if it approaches you, here are some tips:

Stay calm and slowly back away

Do not turn your back or run

Stand tall, wave your hands and shout at it

Pick up small children or small pets

Parents are encouraged to remind their children not to approach, disturb, or interact with wildlife - especially at this time of year, when animals may be caring for and protecting their young.

🌳 Calling All Tree Experts! 🌳

At Saunders Country Critters Sanctuary, dead trees are more than just an eyesore. They can pose a serious risk to our animal residents, visitors, fences, and habitats.

We have a number of dead trees that need to be safely removed throughout the sanctuary. This isn’t a typical tree removal job. Many of the trees are located near animal enclosures, which means the work must be done carefully and thoughtfully to minimize stress for our noise-sensitive residents and to ensure everyone’s safety.

Our furry, feathered, and hoofed family depends on us to keep their homes safe, and we’d like to address these hazards before nature decides to do it for us.

If you are an insured tree service company, arborist, or know someone who is, we’d appreciate hearing from you. We’re currently looking for quotes and site visits to assess the work required.

Please send us a message through our page or contact the sanctuary directly at [email protected] .

As always, thank you for helping us provide a safe and secure home for the hundreds of animals who call Saunders Country Critters Sanctuary home. ❤️🦊🦙🦚

Please feel free to tag reputable tree service companies or share this post with anyone who may be able to help. 🌲💚

Canada’s water story is huge, and also more complicated than the postcard version.

We really do sit on one of the planet’s great freshwater endowments, with lakes, rivers, wetlands, glaciers, snowpack, and groundwater spread across a massive country.

The Great Lakes alone hold a staggering share of the world’s fresh surface water, and they help power cities, farms, shipping, and industry on both sides of the border.

The twist is geography.

A lot of our water is far north, frozen, underground, seasonal, or flowing away from where most Canadians live.

That makes water less like a giant national piggy bank and more like a fragile system we have to understand, protect, and manage carefully.

Canada is water-rich, and that’s exactly why we can’t be careless with it.
