Wishing everyone across Stratford and area a safe and happy Labour Day long weekend! 🇨🇦

Labour Day is more than the unofficial end of summer. It is an opportunity to recognize Canada’s early leadership in the North American labour movement—and the rights many of us now take for granted.

In 1872, Toronto printing workers went on strike demanding a nine-hour workday. Thousands marched in their support, helping bring about the legal recognition of trade unions in Canada. This happened ten years before the first recognized American Labor Day parade. In 1894, Labour Day officially became a national holiday in both countries.

Canada’s labour standards have continued to distinguish us in North America. While protections vary by province and industry, Canadian workers generally benefit from statutory paid vacation, public holidays, job-protected parental leave and termination notice or compensation—protections that are not guaranteed nationally to the same extent in the United States.

Here in Stratford, generations of railway, manufacturing, furniture and agricultural workers helped build our city and local economy. This weekend, we recognize their contribution and the progress made by working people across Canada.
