So proud of our Summerland firefighters. Since Friday Aug 7, it has been an incredibly difficult and frightening one for our community as the wildfire threatened Summerland. While so many of us were watching, waiting and worrying, our firefighters were out there working tirelessly day after day—and through the nights—to help protect our town, our homes and our community.
What most people don't see are all the hours behind the scenes, the exhaustion, the missed sleep and family time, and the commitment it takes to keep showing up when everyone else is being told to stay away from danger. These men and women are truly selfless. They put their own comfort and safety aside to look after all of us, and even now, they continue to remain ready and on call.
I'm incredibly proud of the entire Summerland Fire Department and all of the firefighters, emergency personnel and support crews who worked together during this fire.
On a personal note, I couldn't be prouder of my husband, Steven Almas. Watching his dedication to his team and to this community over the past week and a bit has reminded me once again of the kind of person he is. There are so many things that happen behind the scenes that our community will never fully see or know. To Steve and this entire crew—thank you. You are the real heroes!
So grateful for each and every one of you, and so proud to call Summerland home. Wishing everyone a safe transition back home when you are able and my thoughts go out to our friends and community who lost their homes. We are here for you.
