I know that guy. Amazing story.
It's time for another stop on our REMAX Canada Children's Miracle Network Canada Month of Miracles Journey. This week, we're taking a trip to Prince Edward Island to hear from our Champion Child Ellis and her family about the positive impact REMAX has had on them.
We thought we'd let Lori, Ellis' mom, tell you about their REMAX journey in her own words:
"When our daughter Ellis became a full-time power wheelchair user, we realized that the home we thought would be our forever home was no longer meeting our family's needs. Our three-story house created barriers that limited her independence and made everyday life more challenging.
We reached out to a local REMAX agent named Darcy Gallant. From the very beginning, Darcy understood what was important to our family. Not only did we need an accessible home, but we also needed to remain within the boundaries of Ellis' fully accessible school.
Darcy helped us find the perfect piece of land in our school district. That opportunity became the foundation for creating a home designed around accessibility and independence. Through connections made during the process, we were introduced to a contractor who helped bring our vision to life: a one-level home built with Ellis' needs in mind. We even included a bonus space with a stair lift, allowing access to additional areas while maintaining accessibility.
Just as importantly, Darcy successfully sold our previous home at exactly the right time. His guidance and timing made it possible for us to move directly into our new home without needing an interim place to live. During what could have been a very stressful transition, Darcy's expertise helped ensure our family had a smooth path from our old home into the new one we had worked so hard to create.
Beyond helping us find our home, Darcy (now our neighbour) went above and beyond during our first Halloween in the neighborhood. Understanding the challenges that stairs can create for wheelchair users, Darcy helped organize an accessible trick-or-treating experience. Neighbours displayed REMAX signs indicating accessible stops and handed out candy from their garages, making it possible for Ellis to participate alongside her peers without struggling to navigate steps. It was a thoughtful gesture that transformed Halloween into a truly inclusive experience and showed us what a supportive community looks like.
For our family, REMAX was about much more than buying and selling property. The impact of this home on Ellis' life has been immeasurable. She can move independently throughout the main living areas, access her bedroom without assistance, and invite friends over with ease. Sleepovers, playdates, and neighborhood gatherings became simple parts of everyday life rather than complicated logistical challenges. Having a home designed for her needs helped foster the vibrant, confident, and independent young woman she is today, and we are forever grateful for the part REMAX played in making that possible."
