Detecting the Undetectable: Carbon Monoxide and Your Home
One of the biggest threats to homeowners isn't something you can see. In fact, it is undetectable to all the human senses - making it all the more dangerous. So what is this mysterious, hidden threat? Carbon Monoxide.
We have all heard horror stories of families in older homes going to bed one night and not waking up due to a Carbon Monoxide leak. This is why all homes should have Carbon Monoxide detectors installed, especially those with gas appliances and older furnaces.
Due to the nature of the gas and it's undetectable qualities, it's not enough to trust your nose or your hunches. With that being said, carbon monoxide leaks are often accompanied by other gases, like natural gas. If you think something is acting up in your home it is always a good idea to get it checked by a professional.
A 2017 study done by the University of Fraser Valley found that there are more than 300 deaths and over 200 hospitalizations per year related to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
So this all seems pretty grim, right? The good news is there are ways you can make sure you're keeping yourself and your family safe! First off, ensure you have a working Carbon Monoxide detector, testing it at least once a year. For extra peace of mind, you should also make sure your gas appliances, such as your furnace, stove, and water heater, are maintained and inspected annually by a licensed professional.
