Ontario has recorded a 12 percent jump in housing starts this January compared to the same month last year, marking the first notable increase after years of decline. New data from CMHC shows 3,905 of the starts were multi-residential units, while just 550 were single-detached homes. The uptick comes as the province struggles to revive a market hit by weak pre-construction sales and subdued demand.
The Ford government has introduced measures including development charge deferrals and new incentives for first-time buyers to spur construction. Ontario is aiming to build 1.5 million homes by 2031 but reached only 80 percent of its 2024 target. This year’s target rises to 150,000 homes, with 175,000 planned for 2026.
