For most of my life I was skinny but about 4 years ago I started gaining weight. 4 years later, I found myself at 70 kg.
My appearance doesn’t concern me, my health does. The difficulty with physical activity, brain fog, fatigue, exhaustion. And in the entrepreneurial style, I started blaming myself: “You’re not disciplined enough, not working hard enough.” Sound familiar?
6 months ago, I started working out, took my supplements, tracked my calories and my sleep. 6 months later? Nothing. So I decided to test a full hormone panel. And there it was. I’m insulin resistant and my hormones are out of balance.
After years of beating myself up, I finally had an answer. I’m in perimenopause. And it affects my body, brain, energy. But most importantly, it’s something I can do something about.
The reason I’m sharing this it’s because I think entrepreneurs often make the same mistake in business. When results aren’t showing up, our first instinct is to blame ourselves. Work harder. Push more. Be more disciplined.
Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes the problem isn’t effort. Sometimes you’re operating without all the information, you’re solving the wrong problem, paddling as hard as you can, but in the wrong direction.
For years, I thought I had a discipline problem. What I actually have is a hormone problem. That’s a very different solution.
And while we’re at it, can we stop pretending that aging is something to be ashamed of? I hate that women often feel pressured to hide their age. I hate that we’re expected to act as though we’re somehow frozen in time. Growing older is a privilege. Many people never get the opportunity. So yes, I’m getting older. What worked at 25 no longer works at 47. And that’s okay.
Unlike our mothers and grandmothers, we now have access to options that can help us navigate this stage of life differently.
So if you’re struggling with something right now, whether it’s your health or business before you assume you’re lazy, undisciplined, or not working hard enough, make sure you understand the real problem first. The solution often becomes much clearer once you do.
