The Bank of Canada cut its benchmark interest rate today but signalled that it might be at the end of its easing cycle even as U.S. tariffs inflict significant and lasting damage on the Canadian economy.
The bank’s governing council voted to lower the policy rate by a quarter-percentage-point to 2.25 per cent. This was the bank’s second consecutive cut, and the fourth cut this year.

U.S. Federal Reserve expected to cut interest rate again despite data gaps
The decision was driven by a weakening economic outlook and a belief that inflation is largely contained. But Governor Tiff Macklem suggested that it may be the bank’s last rate cut for some time.

The Bank of Canada is pressing pause.

Today, the central bank held its key interest rate at 2.75%, following seven consecutive cuts over the past year. This move signals a cautious approach as economic uncertainty grows, especially due to the ongoing trade turmoil out of the U.S.

Governor Tiff Macklem cited unpredictable tariff decisions and market volatility stemming from President Trump’s recent actions as key reasons for holding steady.

What this means for you:
• Borrowing costs remain low—for now.
• Buyers and homeowners still benefit from previous rate cuts.
• Market conditions could shift quickly, depending on how trade tensions unfold.

If you’re considering buying, refinancing, or selling, now’s a great time to re-evaluate your strategy.
