CPI, which measures inflation matters to us because it affects our personal finances! It affects how much we are spending on goods and services (energy, shelter costs, food, etc.) as well as how far our dollar will go!

It also affects the Bank of Canada’s decisions which impacts our interest rate environment.

CPI for May came in at 3.2%, another uptick from last month. Higher gasoline prices were the main contributor to the increase. Fortunately, core inflation held steady at 2.05%, which is much closer to the Bank of Canada's preference. Even though inflation is heating up, at this point, it is still expected to be temporary. Although the conversation has switched from rate cuts to rate hikes, if a hike does come this year, it's not expected until the end of the year.

The next Bank of Canada announcement is scheduled for July 15, 2026
