Hidden at the end of a private street, this 6.2-acre estate unfolds more like a private landscape than a conventional Los Angeles residence. Designed by architect Jeffrey Trapold and completed in 2008 by JMA Jim Murphy & Associates, the 4,858 sqft residence draws from rural W**e Country architecture while opening itself almost completely to the surrounding landscape. Hawaiian lava rock, Brazilian slate, petrified sequoia stone and Ipe wood bring weight and texture to architecture otherwise defined by expansive glazing and 270-degree views stretching from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific.

The most revealing space may be Disco Volante, a private nightclub built into the residence, a reminder that this house was never intended to disappear quietly into the hillside.

He bought the property in 2004 for $4.3 million, then transformed it into the 24,592-square-foot residence completed in 2012. Behind the gates are formal entertaining rooms, a chef’s kitchen, private study, theater, game room, music hall, w**e cellar, gym, salon and massage spaces, with a primary suite that has its own sitting room, fireplace, private deck, and dual bathrooms.

Peter Thiel is the mystery buyer behind one of Los Angeles’ biggest home sales of the year.

The billionaire quietly acquired Casa Encantada for $130 million at a foreclosure auction in July, purchasing the historic Bel Air estate through an LLC. The 1937 property sits on roughly 8.5 acres above the Bel-Air Country Club and has already set national real estate records twice before, selling for $12.4 million in 1980 and $94 million in 2000.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Thiel does not plan to make it his primary residence. Instead, he intends to upgrade the estate as a real estate investment.

Nearly 90 years after it was built, Casa Encantada has another billionaire owner and another chapter to add to its history.
