The end of August always feels a little bittersweet. Summer isn’t quite over… but September somehow still feels like a fresh start. 🍂

Not every space has an obvious purpose — and that’s exactly where staging matters.

This little area could have easily felt like awkward, unused square footage. Instead, we turned it into a bright, functional home office that helps buyers see how the space can actually work for them.

Today marks 12 years since I decided to go out on my own and start Charlotte Interiors. As I sit here and reflect on how far we’ve come I thought I’d take you on that journey with me.

In 2014 I decided I was interested in this thing called Home Staging that was just becoming a thing in Halifax. So I found a course and flew to Toronto to get certified.

I also enrolled in an interior design program that year as well while working for an interior design company in Halifax.

Finally on August 1st in 2014 I decided to make the leap and start my own business. I was a little naive at them time, thinking I’d have people knocking on my door to work with me. I was wrong haha, but I did have family friends who took a leap of faith on me and gave me my first design project.

I continued to work on my business doing staging jobs with a few realtors that really believed in staging in those early years. I used rented furniture from rent-to-own companies as it was an easier way to get into the industry instead of investing in my own furniture. I did the best I could at the time with the furniture that was available. It’s funny when I look back at those stagings, I’m surprised I got as many jobs as I did haha

Then in 2017, my mom and I took on one of my favourite challenges, flipping a house. It was such fun project and I was so happy to be able to do that with my mom.

In 2019, the furniture rental company that I had used for the past 5 years was shut down, so I decided to create my own furniture rental company for stagers and realtors. I invested in new furniture that was more on trend than the rental company. It was so great to finally get some better furniture and really stage properties to look their best. Business started booming!

During Covid we really grew like crazy, taking on lots of design projects and lots of stagings! I hired my first employee in 2020 and the team continued to grow. We closed the furniture rental company and just decided to focus on growing our own staging company.

In 2024 we were able to fulfill a huge goal of ours, which was to be part of the QE2 Lottery Homes, we helped design not just 1 but 2 of the dream cottages.
