A day at Sen̓áḵw with Austin Aan’Yas Harry, Graphic Artist.

For Austin, the work he creates for Sen̓áḵw draws on the land’s history and is inspired by Coast Salish and Squamish culture, storytelling and design. His practice is personal, rooted in years of study under his father and mentor, Xwalacktun, Rick Harry, who taught him Coast Salish art and instilled in him a great pride in his culture.

Now, Austin’s goal is to bring that same pride to the community living at Sen̓áḵw, so it’s felt not only by Squamish people, but by everyone who calls this place home.

For Austin Aan’yas Harry, Graphic Artist behind the digital art for Sen̓áḵw, the village is steeped in Coast Salish and Squamish culture, history, and storytelling, and that’s exactly why he feels such a deep connection to it.

He learned Coast Salish art and design from his mentor and father, Xwalacktun, Rick Harry who believed his work was his ancestors working through him. Today, Austin feels those same ancestors patting him on the back, supporting his work.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour residential school Survivors and their families, and remember the children who never returned home.

The impacts of the residential school system continue to be felt by Indigenous families and communities across generations.

This weekend at Sen̓áḵw, residents came together in a spirit of learning and reflection. In partnership with the Vancouver Public Library, we shared resources about residential schools,
Indigenous histories and reconciliation, alongside food from Indigenous-owned Salmon n’ Bannock.

Truth comes before reconciliation. Learning and listening are important acts of remembrance, and that responsibility extends beyond September 30.

Today, we encourage everyone who calls Sen̓áḵw home and beyond to take time to listen, learn and reflect.

Sen̓áḵw is welcoming a new commercial partner to help bring our vision for a world-class cycling community to life. Bishop’s Family Cycles will join Vancity as the second commercial tenant at our modern Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Village, opening at sméṅhem (Tower 2) later this year.

Owned and operated by Liz and Robert Kemp, Bishop's is a family-run bike shop known for cargo bikes built to help families of all types get riding.

It’s a natural fit for Sen̓áḵw, a village designed for life on two wheels. A future cycling ramp will connect the Burrard Street Bridge directly to the village, alongside Canada’s first cycle-in bicycle parkade and Vancouver’s first cargo bike share with Modo, featuring Riese & Müller bikes from Bishop’s own shop.

Led by the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, Sen̓áḵw continues to build a commercial village that meets the everyday needs of residents while creating opportunities for growing local businesses. More tenant announcements will follow.
