Early Tuesday afternoon, a photo of two hands clutching the bars of a prison cell emblazoned the realtor group’s website, the headline underneath reading: “Liberal Housing Plan to Criminalize Hardworking Families.”

Trudeau promises homebuyers 'bill of rights' and billions in new incentives to help Canadians buy a home.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau promised Tuesday a suite of new measures to help Canadians buy a home at a time when the red-hot housing market has made owning property seem like a distant dream for many young people.

Speaking to reporters in Hamilton, Trudeau said the real estate market is marked by instability and uncertainty and a COVID-fuelled spike has led to soaring prices, bidding wars, rampant speculation and a slew of vacant properties — a situation that demands government intervention to ease more people into their own homes.

The aggressive plan — billions in new funding, a temporary ban on flipping homes, blocking foreign nationals from buying homes for two years and new regulatory measures to police exploitative real estate agents — comes at a time when Canadians are telling pollsters that housing is one of the issues they care about most.

The three-point program includes commitments to unlock home ownership through new government funding, a plan to build more homes to address supply constraints and measures to establish and protect new rights for buyers.

If you work hard, if you save, that dream of having your own place should be in reach. But for too many people, it just isn't — and that's not right, Trudeau said.

You shouldn't have to move far away from your job, or school or family to afford your rent. You shouldn't lose a bidding war on your home to speculators. It's time for things to change....

Federal Government Launches New Home Retrofit Grant Program

The federal government has launched a new program that offers homeowners grants to retrofit their homes and make them more energy efficient. The Canada Greener Home Grants program, funded to the tune of $2.6 billion, will offer homeowners grants of up to $5,000 that can be put toward energy-saving projects such as:

Improved insulation;

Air sealing, thermostats;

Energy efficient heating and cooling equipment;

Solar panels; and

Energy-efficient windows and doors.

The program will also include grants of up to $600 that can be used for EnerGuide home energy audits. The Canada Greener Home Grants program is expected to award 700,000 grants over seven years......

Canada’s housing market may be heading for a soft landing at the end of the year after what could be a record-breaking 2021, a new report by RBC Economics said.

The report published Wednesday said “supercharged” demand driven in part by low rates, high household savings and improving consumer confidence will continue to push housing market activity in Canada to record highs. The increase is set to take place after a 2020 that was likely the strongest year ever for the market despite the COVID-19 pandemic stalling activity in the spring.....
