Sunday was one of my favourite kinds of afternoons. Matt and I headed to Kelowna for the Okanagan Feast of Fields at Summerhill Pyramid Winery, a wandering harvest festival where you walk from tent to tent tasting food and wine from local chefs, farmers, and producers.
This year's Feast was a fundraiser for FarmFolk CityFolk, an organization working to strengthen BC's food systems from the ground up. Matt and I have been passionate about local food for most of our lives, in different ways. He runs the North Okanagan Butcher Hub, helping small-scale farmers get their meat processed and to market. I've spent years volunteering with the Good Food Box and thinking about food security closer to home.
It was also a good excuse to spend the afternoon with our dear friend Andrea Gunner, deputy registrar for the Agrologists Association of BC and a board member with FarmFolk CityFolk. She's someone who genuinely lives this work, and it shows.
Being at an event like this, surrounded by the people actually growing, raising, and cooking our food, is a good reminder of how much work and care sits behind a single meal. It's not abstract. It's neighbours and small operations doing something that matters.
If you care about where your food comes from too, look into FarmFolk CityFolk or the slow food movement here in the Okanagan. There's always a way to get more connected to it.
