We’re excited to share that Wendy Coldwell has been selected as this year’s Know Your Neighbour Community Grant recipient! Last week we met up with Wendy Coldwell to share the exciting news.

Wendy is a true inspiration at Portage West and throughout the wider community. She champions mental health resources, the power of staying active, and the value of meaningful community connection. Always learning, always moving, and always lifting others up—Wendy shows us just how far curiosity, kindness, and empathy can take you. (Her next adventure: a cycling trip through Thailand!)

Wendy has chosen to direct the charitable portion of her grant to Camosun College’s Erasing Barriers to Education Fund, which has supported more than 500 students since 2020 with essentials like food security, housing, medical bills, childcare, tuition, and more.

Congratulations, Wendy—and thank you for helping make our community stronger!

Site prep is underway at Coast. Demolition has started on the former Cedarwood Inn and Suites property in Sidney, but not without ensuring some of the site’s history lived on.

Two of the buildings, known as panabodes, were moved from the property last Friday morning to the nearby Tseycum First Nation on the Saanich Peninsula, where they will provide essential housing for Tseycum Elders. GMC provided the buildings to the Nation, who partnered with Nickel Bros to coordinate the move.

Fixtures and cabinetry from the remaining buildings have been donated to the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation in Gold River, to be used to upgrade existing housing.

We couldn’t be more pleased to see buildings from the Cedarwood get a second life as housing, while reducing construction waste from the landfill. Thanks to everyone who played a role in supporting this adaptive reuse.
