Think Differently. Act Boldly.
When I was working as a Realtor in Oakville, I remember the challenge of trying to secure one of only two coveted billboard spots in the city. They were booked solid—years in advance—and while I managed to land a short-term window on one of them, I knew I needed something more consistent, something with lasting impact.
One day, while sipping a coffee at Oakville Place Mall and waiting for a client, I noticed something simple—but powerful. Every person riding the escalator down was a captive audience, gazing around as they descended. That’s when it hit me ‘what if I could place an ad right there—on the floor—at the bottom of the escalator? A kind of “billboard beneath your feet.”
Without hesitation, I contacted the property manager with the idea. They admitted they’d never heard of anything like it but agreed to ask the tenants for feedback. With no objections, I was granted a three-month trial—and insisted on securing a set rate and first right of refusal if it proved successful. To my surprise, they agreed.
That escalator floor ad became one of the most effective and talked-about marketing tools I’ve ever used. It sparked conversations, selfies, and most importantly—calls from buyers and sellers.
The Lesson? Innovation doesn’t always come from a big budget—it comes from curiosity, awareness, and the courage to ask “What if?” Don’t wait for doors to open. Sometimes, you need to build your own entrance.
