Mother’s Day looks a little different for me these days. I miss my mom deeply. She was one of the strongest women I’ve ever known. Supportive, resilient, loving, and an absolute tough cookie. She taught me so much about perseverance, compassion, and showing up for the people you love no matter what. I carry those lessons with me every single day, and I’m endlessly grateful to have had her as my mom. ❤️

At the same time, I feel incredibly lucky to be a mom to Josh. I love that kid to bits and could not be more proud of the young man he is becoming. He has such a kind heart, a loving soul, and brings so much joy into my life. Being his mom is truly one of my greatest blessings.

Today I’m holding both gratitude and grief in my heart. Missing my mom, while cherishing every moment I get to have with my son.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms, those missing their moms, and those carrying on their love through the generations. 💕

Navigating zoning in Greater Victoria was the focus of a panel I recently had the pleasure of MC’ing and facilitating. With new provincial legislation like Bill 44 reshaping zoning across the province and allowing small-scale multi-unit housing like duplexes, four-plexes and even six-plexes in areas traditionally zoned for single-family homes, it’s clear that the way we plan and build housing is evolving quickly and there are many layers to the process!

The discussion had valuable insights from these incredible panelists:

Carl Purvis is the Manger of Current Planning at the District of Saanich. He oversees zoning, development applications, and regulatory planning in one of the Capital Region’s most active municipalities.

Teunesha Evertse is a Principal planner with Westplan Consutlting. Her work experience has varied across the industry from development consulting for a social enterprise that develops affordable housing throughout BC, to municipal planning, to a management role at a local planning and development consulting company.

Jan Ostrowski is the owner and developer at Contempo Developments. Jan started working in development in 2015 and has built over 40 homes across the region — from Sooke to North Saanich — including garden suites, townhouses, and small multi-family projects. He was involved in SSMUH early on and sold the first newly built four-plex in Saanich under the new rules. Right now, he is building four- and six-plex projects in Saanich, Nanaimo, and Oak Bay.

Chris Quigley is the Director of Development at Aryze. Chris has worked on projects throughout North America and Europe, including master-planned communities, affordable housing projects, brownfield redevelopment and specialty commercial/retail projects.
