Gate valve vs. ball valve: What’s the difference? 🔧
If your home still has old-style gate valves, it may be worth replacing them with ball valves, especially if the valve is getting difficult to turn, leaking, or simply isn’t operating the way it should.
Here’s why we often recommend the upgrade:
🔹 Easier to operate: Ball valves typically require just a ¼ turn to go from fully open to fully closed.
🔹 More reliable shutoff: A properly functioning ball valve provides a strong, dependable seal when you need to shut the water off.
🔹 Less likely to get stuck and break: Old gate valves can become stiff or seize up over time, particularly if they haven't been operated in years.
🔹 Easy to tell if they're open or closed: With a ball valve, the handle position gives you an immediate visual indication. Parallel to the pipe = open. Perpendicular = closed.
🔹 A great upgrade while we're already working on your plumbing: If we're replacing a section of piping or working near an old valve, upgrading it can save you from dealing with a failing valve down the road.
In this case, we removed the old gate valve and replaced it with a new ball valve. Same job of controlling your water, but a much simpler and more reliable design.
💡 Tip: Take a look at your main water shutoff and other older valves around your home. If they're difficult to turn, don't operate smoothly, or you're not confident they'll actually shut the water off when you need them to, it's worth having them checked.
Sometimes the little plumbing upgrades are the ones you’ll be most thankful for when you need them.
