36 days ago, we were evacuated. For Summerland residents, it has been 37.
In the days that followed, social media was filled with questions, fear, anger, blame, advice and uncertainty.

I chose to be quiet.
That wasn't because life or business had stopped. It was a conscious decision because posting about "finding your dream home" felt insignificant when someone reading that post might be grieving the loss of theirs.

The sun continued to come up. Life carried on because, it always does.
I kept thinking about the people who were wondering how everyone else could carry on when their world had just changed forever.
I wanted to leave some space for them.

Living in the Okanagan has taught me to hold the idea of "home" a little differently.
I have a go-bag with important papers. I understand "things" can become ash in a moment.

Although my job is helping people buy / sell beautiful houses, I know that the house itself is never the most precious thing inside it.

It's the people.
The pets.
The life we've built within those walls.
We hear of structures lost, but structures aren't people — Stats can't measure everything a community has lost or is still navigating.

The children returning to school after weeks of uncertainty, lost jobs, reduced hours or businesses trying to recover, interrupted vacations, cancelled weddings, displaced families, frightened pets, exhausted first responders. Countless people whose lives were changed even though their house was still standing.
Ripples from an event like this cannot be captured.

It's easy to compare pain.
"Someone else had it worse."
Your pain doesn't become less real because another person "lost more".
Comparison removes connection.
Be kind.
Check on your neighbors.
Call the friend you've been thinking about.

📦 Moving Day Doesn't Have to Be Chaotic! 🚚

After helping many families move, I've learned one thing... the less you have to move, the easier moving day becomes!

Here are a few of my favorite moving tips:

✔️ Declutter before you pack. Don't waste time or money moving items you no longer use. If it isn't coming to your new home, now is the time to donate, sell, or recycle it.

✔️ Pack an Essentials Box. Think coffee ☕, chargers 🔌, medications 💊, toiletries, toilet paper, snacks, pet supplies, and a change of clothes. Keep it with you—not on the moving truck!

✔️ Label every box. Write the room it belongs in and what's inside. Your future self will thank you.

✔️ Take photos of electronics. Before unplugging them. Reconnecting everything is much easier when you have a reference.

✔️ Take photos of Display cabinets. Before preciously packing them. unpacking and placing precious items back in their space is much easier when you have a reference.

✔️ Keep important documents with you. Keys, IDs, passports, legal paperwork, and moving documents should always stay in your vehicle.

✔️ Clean as each room is emptied. It's much easier than tackling the whole house at the end of a long day.

💛 My biggest tip? Give yourself grace. You don't have to unpack your entire home in one weekend. Focus on getting the beds made, the coffee maker plugged in, and the essentials put away. The rest can wait.
