We're proud to have recently completed a new daycare facility in Terrace for the Métis Nation, creating a dedicated space that will serve local families and support the community for years to come.

This project was purposely designed and built for 45 children across three age groups. Each group has its own dedicated space, so the routines can stay consistent and calm. There’s a shared kitchen that supports the whole facility, along with a nap room, a multi-purpose room, a staff room, and an office. Nothing extra or decorative, just what’s needed to run the program properly from the start.

And it wasn’t just about the building. The scope included the full site work as well. That meant servicing, grading, a new parking lot, and landscaping to finish the space properly. We also had to replace and upgrade over 100 feet of existing sanitary line, which wasn’t just for the daycare but was sized to support future residential development on the site as well.

The building itself was constructed in our Westbank facility, then transported and installed in Terrace. It opened on time, on budget, and was ready for children the moment the doors opened.

Most people don't picture a playground when they think about modular construction. But for daycare operators, the outdoor space matters as much as the building. It's an extension of the classroom, where kids build social skills, explore, and spend a big part of their day. It isn't landscaping tacked on at the end. It's part of the program from day one.

The catch is that a daycare has to work as a whole. Licensing, accessibility, the way the outdoor areas connect to the building and the site. Coordinate those late and you pay for it in change orders and delays.

That played out on a recent daycare in Terrace. Forty-five childcare spaces across three age-group programming areas, delivered single scope from the first design conversation through to a fully landscaped, move-in-ready site. The building, the site servicing, and the outdoor areas were planned together, so the outdoor space wasn't an afterthought once the building landed.

That's what a fully turnkey design-build approach means for a daycare project. The space functions the way children, educators, and staff actually use it every day because those needs were considered from the very beginning, not added as an afterthought.

For more than a decade, Randy built the systems, standards, and safety culture behind every Freeport project. On July 3, he retires, leaving a stronger and safer company than the one he joined.

Randy started with Freeport in 2013 as Operations Manager and returned in 2021 as Construction Manager. Across both chapters, he strengthened how we operate and how we work safely.

Randy led Freeport to COR certification in just 14 months, with a 94% compliance rating. More than a certificate on the wall, he built a culture where safety is simply how we work.

As our President, Chris Inkster, shared:
"Randy is retiring after a decade of an incredible partnership across two chapters with Freeport. His dedication, integrity, and work ethic have been the backbone of our project delivery. What impresses me most is his relentless efficiency and sound judgment. Randy, enjoy this next chapter with your family. You've earned it."

What does it actually look like when a purpose-built daycare for 45 children is built 1,400 km away from where it will eventually open?

Right here on our factory floor in Westbank, while the site in Terrace was being graded, parking was being poured, and over 100 feet of aging sanitary line was being replaced and upsized for future growth, the building itself was already coming to life indoors.

Inside the facility, everything was being assembled in real time. Three programming spaces for three age groups. A central kitchen designed to serve them all. A nap room, multi-purpose room, staff room, office. Every space coordinated between our design team, our production crew, and the site team working more than 14 hours north at the exact same time.

That’s the part most people don’t see. Modular isn’t just building in a factory. It’s running two job sites at once, one indoors and one outdoors, and making sure they meet perfectly when the modules arrive.

This project was delivered fully turnkey. Site servicing, grading, parking, landscaping, and the building itself all under one coordinated scope. By the time the structure left our facility, the site was ready to receive it.
