Caught Brandon heading out this morning and asked what he had on the go.

One of our clients tried snaking her own drain - which, honestly, makes total sense. It’s the kind of thing that looks straightforward.
But part of the snake broke off and got lodged inside the pipe, so now she has the original clog and a piece of metal stuck in her drain.

Brandon’s on his way to sort it out and get everything running properly again. No judgment here at all. DIY attempts are completely understandable - especially when you’re not sure if something is worth a service call or if you just want to try handling it yourself first.

We get it.

A flooded basement doesn’t always start inside your home.

In older neighbourhoods, the city’s sewer system can back up during heavy rain - and without the right protection, that water has nowhere to go but into your basement.

It’s one of those risks most homeowners don’t know about until they’re dealing with the damage. We just finished installing a backwater valve here in Oshawa. In this video, our tech Matt explains what it does, how it works, and why it matters - especially if your home is in an older part of town where the infrastructure is aging and the risk is higher.

A couple of things worth knowing:
A backwater valve is a one-way gate installed on your main sewer line. When the city’s system backs up, it closes automatically - blocking sewage from entering your home.
It also affects your home insurance. Many insurers offer reduced premiums or expanded coverage when a backwater valve is properly installed. That’s worth a conversation with your provider.

This is a galvanized water line - commonly used in older homes, and something we still see all the time.

Over the years, these pipes corrode from the inside.
What starts as a small buildup turns into restricted flow, reduced pressure, and in many cases… water that isn’t as clean as it should be.
