Soulspace Design Build

Soulspace Design Build We began this project with the intent to build an affordable, bright, joyful community on Lowe.

Singles of any age, couples used to living in shared space, those wishing to downsize or age in place — a first home or a final home – you'll love the thoughtful touches of these bright, spacious downtown homes. By the time we started building the 4-plex we were ankle deep in the pandemic and the price of everything had skyrocketed. As a very small crew of three people, building through the pandem

ic was extra slow, kind of insane, and supply issues continue. However, the value of our homes – from location, light, view, quality, soundproofing, energy efficiency, storage, finishing and landscaping – is excellent, and the price per square foot is actually below market in comparison to other new downtown condos – passing the $50,000 Yukon Housing Grant on to you the buyer, and putting the grant from the hard-won 61% above NBC energy efficiency rating on the roof in the form of solar panels, for you.

Soulspace grew out of a love of simple spaces, natural light, the feeling of a home being a high-vibration sanctuary for the replenishing of body, mind and soul, and the wish that everyone who wanted to, could live in such a space. When I met someone who shared this sense and had the skills to actualize it – Philippe Mouchet – Soulspace was born.

We started with home additions, home renovations, custom furniture design, a tiny house, a basement suite, a garden suite and eventually a Riverdale triplex on McQuesten, then a second on Lowe, and now a 4-plex on Lowe, the hardest by far of all our projects to date. Partly because it is a more complex building, partly because there were more location-based complexities, but also because of the many additional challenges brought by the pandemic.

Along the way, we found a third kindred spirit, Joey Lavoie. So although still a very small team, we are a mighty one that also does yoga together, meditates, listens to mantras on the worksite, and are all vegan. Kind of hilarious and wonderful, and I think is reflected in the environmental ethics of the worksite and choices we make in details, design, and finishing, in the quality of the work, and in the spirit or "vibe" of the places we create. Lucky us! And hopefully, also lucky you : ) if these sorts of things resonate with you. Plus of course, location, location, location! View, view, view!

The th*****me is, from left to right: Joey Lavoie, Erica Heuer and Philippe Mouchet. Joey is an amazing framing carpenter, metalworker, concrete worker and finisher. Philippe was Joey's assistant in finishing the structure, siding, and then jumped inside to bring his special flair and fine details to the finishing work. The build from hole in the ground to structure was done by Aussie Built, one of the Yukon's premier custom homebuilders.

A shout out too to our lovely electrician, Chip Paldy of FCC Electric and his partner Janne. They feel like part of the style, part of the energy efficiency drive, part of the team, figuring out the best solutions with us and tuck-taping every staple hole in the vapour barrier. Above and beyond. And to Wes, our plumber from Northern Plumbing who never complained of the changes and brightened our days with a truly retro 1970's 'stache. What a team.
