Zellers is coming to Windsor!

Thee company announced they will open at Tecumseh Mall this July as part of a broader expansion across Ontario and Canada. The relaunch follows the successful reopening of the iconic discount retailer in Edmonton last year.

The new store will feature apparel, home goods, luggage, seasonal merchandise, toys, and snack foods. The current owners of the Zellers brand have indicated they have plans to continue expanding nationally after acquiring the rights to the nearly 100-year-old Canadian retailer.

Windsor’s east-end is really coming together this summer with the addition of a new transit terminal, Costco development, and the Banwell overpass.

What do you think — does Zellers still have a place in today’s retail landscape, or is this mostly nostalgia driving the comeback

The greenhouse industry has been one of the biggest economic success stories in Windsor-Essex, but growth often comes with new challenges.

In this conversation, Michael Del Ciancio of DC Farms in Kingville shares his thoughts on greenhouse lighting, community concerns, and why the industry should continue looking for practical solutions that allow growers to remain global leaders while being good neighbours.

At RealFi, we’ve learned that the best opportunities come from understanding the people, challenges, and industries that drive our region forward.

🌱 The greenhouse glow over Leamington and Kingsville has recently been photographed from the International Space Station.

A new CBC article explores how the rapid adoption of grow lights over the last decade helped transform Essex County into one of North America’s largest greenhouse hubs, allowing year-round production of vegetables and cannabis while supporting food security, jobs, and economic growth.

That growth also sparked concerns around light pollution, leading both Leamington and Kingsville to introduce light abatement bylaws requiring blackout curtains and nighttime controls.

Leamington allows limited “gapping” (up to 10%) so heat and humidity can escape, while Kingsville requires full closure and alternative cooling methods.

The article notes compliance has improved significantly, complaints have declined, and municipalities are now seeing far fewer enforcement actions than in previous years.

Are we doing a good enough job with light pollution?

Windsor Development in the Pipeline 🌊🏄‍♂️

A major piece of land tied to the future Ojibway National Urban Park has officially changed hands.

The 34.75-acre property at the corner of Sprucewood Avenue and Matchett Road has been sold, marking another important step in the evolution of Windsor’s west end. While the buyer and sale price have not been disclosed, this parcel was one of four properties previously listed as part of a larger 43.39-acre land assembly.

The land has been closely watched because of its proximity to the proposed Ojibway National Urban Park, with Parks Canada previously setting aside $36 million for land acquisition related to the project.

Just weeks ago, Windsor announced an agreement in principle with Parks Canada to move the urban park forward.

➡️ The big question now: Did Parks Canada step up and buy it or was this acquired privately? Will it become part of the Ojibway National Urban Park footprint? 🌳

If you own and operate a greenhouse, are you more of a farmer or more of a businessman?

After spending time around this industry, I’ve realized the answer is usually both.

You need the instincts of a grower, the discipline of an operator, and the mindset of an entrepreneur all at once. It’s one of the most demanding and underrated industries out there.

At Real Fi, we’ve learned that understanding the granular details of an industry is what allows you to truly connect with the people behind the business. Conversations like this are where real insight and real relationships are built.
