☀️ 4 Simple DIY Tips to Keep Your A/C Running Cool This Summer
June is here, and with the summer heat ramping up, your air conditioning unit is about to put in some serious overtime.
Before the peak summer heat waves hit, taking a few minutes to prep your system can lower your energy bills, prevent sudden breakdowns, and extend the life of your A/C.
Here are 4 things you can do this weekend:
1️⃣ Swap the Filter: The simplest step is the most important. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work twice as hard. Check it monthly during peak cooling season.
2️⃣ Clear the Jungle: Your outdoor condenser unit needs room to breathe to release heat. Clear away weeds, tall grass, leaves, and overhanging branches. Aim for at least 2 feet of clear space all around the unit.
3️⃣ Check the Exterior Fins: Look at the metal grill/fins on your outdoor unit. If they are bent or crushed (often from hail, stones, or lawnmowers), airflow is restricted. You can gently straighten them with a fin comb.
4️⃣ Inspect the Condensate Drain: Find where your A/C drains its condensation (usually a white PVC pipe near your indoor furnace). Make sure it’s dripping freely. If it looks clogged with algae or sludge, it can back up and cause water damage.
Pro-Tip: While DIY maintenance is fantastic for daily efficiency, it doesn't replace a professional evaluation before buying or selling a home.
