Autumn smells like earth. Damp soil, roots, mushrooms, bark, fallen needles, wet stones.

Sometimes you notice the change of season before you can really see it. The forest begins to smell different.

One of those small signs that autumn is here.

You know autumn is here when the lake begins to breathe.
Mist rises from the water, moves for a while, then slowly disappears in the morning light.
Like watching the breath of the day.

One of the first signs of autumn in the Engadin.

Every autumn, millions of larch needles turn gold and fall across the Engadin. At Chesa Altrova • St. Moritz, sometimes we collect a few of those already lying on the ground and leave them for our guests in a small box: our Golden Wishes Kit.

The instructions are simple. Take a few needles in your hand, close your eyes, let them fall — and make a wish. But the little ritual isn’t really about larch needles.

It’s about noticing something small that tells us a season is changing. Holding it for a moment. And then letting it go. Here, it’s golden larch needles. Somewhere else, it might be a leaf, a seed or something entirely different.

Altrova’s Engadin — it starts here, but it can happen anywhere.

Autumn is approaching the Engadin.
Not all at once.
First the light changes, then the mornings become quieter, and eventually the larches begin to turn gold.
Three small things to notice during the weeks ahead.

Altrova’s Engadin — a different way to experience the valley.

Light through the larch trees.
A bench, a meadow, and nowhere to be for a while.
A way to stay in the Engadin.
