In 2021, Leonardo Di Caprio, global star and environmental activist, highlighted Chilean Patagonia as being “among the few habitats expected to withstand rising temperatures, making it a potential wildlife refuge” (Twitter).
It is no coincidence that the prominent businessman and environmentalist Douglas Tomkins chose this part of the world for his retirement, dedicating himself to the conservation of vast tracts of land.
The Northern and Southern Ice Fields are considered the third largest freshwater reserve in the world, and a large portion is located in Aysén, one of the three regions that make up Chilean Patagonia, in which some 9,000 of Chile’s total of 24,000 glaciers are found.
As such, there are more rivers than anywhere else in Chile, and the region is home to the second largest lake in South America, Lake General Carrera, making it a world leader in terms of abundance of fresh water.
