Puerto Limón has been shaping Costa Rica’s connection to the wider world for more than a century. 🚂⚓

By the early 1900s, the Caribbean port city was already modernizing, with electric lighting arriving in 1903, a sewer system in 1907, and piped drinking water by 1912.

But Limón’s story is about much more than infrastructure. The railroad, international trade, Afro-Caribbean migration, architecture, culture, and the surrounding natural environment all helped create one of Costa Rica’s most distinctive regions. 🌴

The beaches protected by Tortuguero National Park provide nesting habitat for four sea turtle species. 🐢

The surrounding canals and forests also protect animals such as manatees, tapirs, monkeys, and jaguars, making the park much more than a turtle destination.

Cahuita National Park may look small from the trail, but most of the protected area lies offshore. 🌊🐠

Its marine territory is far larger than its land area, protecting coral reefs, seagrass, tropical fish, and other coastal ecosystems just beyond the beach.

Costa Rica’s Atlantic Railway did much more than connect San José with Limón. 🚂

The route helped shape dozens of communities and transformed the movement of coffee, cacao, bananas, people, and ideas across the country. Its construction also brought workers from Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, permanently influencing Limón’s language, food, music, and identity.

That history also includes discrimination. A 1934 banana agreement barred the United Fruit Company from employing “people of color” in its Pacific operations, limiting opportunities for many Afro-Caribbean workers as the industry expanded west.

Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge in northern Limón covers more than 81,000 hectares of wetlands, rivers, forests, and coastal habitat. 🐊🌿

It is one of those enormous protected areas that many visitors never hear about, even though it shelters an extraordinary range of wildlife.

The name Cahuita comes from Indigenous words connected to the sangrillo tree, a rainforest tree known for its reddish sap. 🌳

The name carries a small piece of the region’s Bribri heritage every time someone says it.
