Say hello to the "Honey Bear". 🤗 Locally known as the Martilla (Potus flavus), they are also known as Kinkajous. Though common throughout Costa Rica from dry forest to rain forest, they're tricky to encounter because of their nocturnal habits. They're rarely seen during the day when humans are normally awake. But sometimes you can catch them moving through the tree tops at sunset on their way out for their nightly meals, or in your back yard when the porch lights are on.

Though omnivorous, almost 90% of their diet consists of ripe fruit. The rest is mostly insects, although they'll eat small birds and mammals, and bird eggs. Their prehensile tail allows them to dangle from branches and move effortlessly through the canopy. They're known for raiding hummingbird feeders in the area using their incredibly long tongues. They also have very sharp teeth and strong claws. Martillas are extremely important for seed dispersal, thus keeping our forests and undergrowth in good health and regenerating areas where trees have fallen or have been cut.

The elusive Tigrillo (Margay)! No less spectacular than it's cousin, the Jaguar, the Tigrillo is an elusive species for humans. It's nocturnal, holds to the treetops, and is extremely shy. But that doesn't mean you might not get lucky if you're in the right place at the right time and paying attention. The arboreal forest habitat of the Tigrillo isn't as vast as it once was, and we're in the process of trying to halt and reverse the trend. We've purchased large parcels of forest and cattle pasture for sustainable development, conservation, and reforestation. Did You Know? The Smokey Bear 🐻 of Costa Rica is an animal called the pizote (Nasua narica), or coati. You'll see them roaming solo or in groups of up to 30. They're super cute, very curious, and almost everyone loves them. That's why Toño Pizote is the official mascot and symbol of the National Fire Management Program of SINAC-MINAE.
