It sits on the shore of Playa Juanito Mora, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Osa Peninsula, yet still sits in the middle of the most luscious tropical jungle, flooded with several varieties of Heliconia, (Birds of Paradise) and colorful orchids sprinkled through-out! Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, T**i Monkeys, Cappuccino Moneys, and Howler Monkeys are all there too! No matter what your personal interests may be, whether it’s bird watching, or hiking, or whale watching, or enjoying our botanical gardens, we have a little bit of everything for everyone to embrace and to see! The Whale Resort is a large beachfront property located on the edge of the small town of Canaza, which is about 10 minutes from Puerto Jimenez, a much larger port town that offers all the amenities such as restaurants, bars, banks/ATMs, pharmacies, medical facilities, tour operators, a commercial airport, and plenty of shopping. If you need something quicker, Canaza also has its own small grocery store just up the road on the corner,
There is also a lot of excellent sport fishing in the area, and Puerto Jimenez is a hub for some very successful boats and captains! The resort is in the Osa Peninsula, and backs up to the Golfo Dulce Bay, There is so much to see and do on the Osa Peninsula. It is a refuge for a large diversity of flora and fauna. There is an abundance of marine life, including dolphins, whale sharks, and huge humpback whales. The humpback whales take three-month journeys from Alaska and the Antarctic. They are most likely to be seen in the Golfo Dulce between July and October, and then again, from January to April, when they have their newborns. The Golfo Dulce which means “sweet water” has an unusually large amount of fresh water rivers flowing into it, making it too toxic for the Orca to swim in, but biologically safe for the Humpbacks, so the have been instinctively traveling to this bay for centuries to have their babies. Making the Whale Resort the most amazing destination for whale watching enthusiasts from all over the world, to come and witness this incredible experience. Every single morning the monkeys show up, lounging in the trees having breakfast, as our property is full of banana trees too. Always have your camera ready because you never know what you might see next! Playa Juanito Mora is a quiet out of the way beach, quietly tucked away on the Golfo Dulce Bay, the water is always warm and calm. It’s always a very relaxing beach and always safe for swimming for everyone young and old. You may see an occasional fisherman, or a local walking, but for the most part, if you want to bask in the sun, exercise, or practice yoga or meditation, you'll have the beach all to yourselves! Finding single accommodations for larger groups is very difficult, if not impossible, if you really want to stay directly on the beach. You can always book a bunch of hotel near the beach, at $250-$300 per night, or you can rent a few vacation homes hopefully within the same vicinity. Then your group is kind of together, but kind of not. These options are expensive, and neither can truly offer oceanfront, directly on the BEACH. You might find something with a good ocean view, or something with some sort of beach access. The Whale Resort eliminates all of these inconveniences. Is a three bedroom/three bath, and sleeps 6 - 8 comfortably, A/C. It has one king, one queen, and two singles in our bedrooms, along with a futon sofa bed in the family room. It's fully equipped with a large kitchen, a wet bar, and a large entertainment room for social gatherings. It has its own private pool and deck area with large porch areas, and enough outdoor seating for 20 + people and a giant gas grill for a great pool party! It’s also oceanfront so everyone has a great view. It has its own gated entrance and enough parking for 5 cars. Owners Home #2 – Tropical Garden View
This is a one bedroom/one bath with a King Bed, and two comfortable futon sofa beds in the family.room. It will sleep 6 comfortably. It has A/C as well, and is fully equipped with a small kitchen and bar area with a TV. It has a large front porch area, and has its own private pool and deck area. This home has a separately gated entrance, with enough parking for 3 cars. SPECIAL THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE WHALE RESORT
There are three species of monkeys in Costa Rica. We have all three – and they live on or near our property. You will find that they are all pretty social, and as curious about you as you are of them. If you're patient enough and have a large supply of banana's, you can get them to come up eat right out of your hands! Our property is full of Palma Real, which is a tree that grows a special nut preferred by Scarlet Macaws and Toucans. Have your camera ready. It's not uncommon to catch a monkey, a macaw, and a toucan, all at the same time! We also have small seating area's spread out through the trails to enjoy the nature, so you might find yourself wanting to sneak away to read a book, have a snack, or maybe to enjoy a bottle of wine, chilling out and fully enjoying all of the peaceful surroundings. Costa Rica has a high season and a green season. The green season is basically from Aug to early Dec. mainly because it rains more. I wouldn't let the rain deter you from coming to CR in any month though. It's always beautiful. It mostly rains in the afternoons in the green season. There is plenty to see and do all year around, rain or shine. The Osa is always a haven for a rich diversity of flora and fauna, and always an abundance of marine life including dolphins and huge Humpback whales, and the sport fishing is always good. Can you imagine what it must feel like, seeing a 60' Humpback whale surface or launch herself, with her baby close by her side! It's not uncommon for our guided boat to run around the bay with a mom and her baby for an hour at a time, or longer! We do offer wireless internet and we will keep you connected, but we ask you understand, “You are in the jungle, in the Osa Peninsula” not New York City, so you expectations should reflect the same! There is always service, but bandwidth can get clogged up in the afternoons. If you want to upload/download files, or use Skype etc. just try to do it at night. If you really need massive data capacity, and want lightning speed, then the later the better. I can tell you there are many guests that run businesses “even when vacationing” and they do it successfully from the Whale Resort, but do their heavy work at night, or early in the mornings. The local service provider is Kolbi and they offer a data card (with prepaid minutes) It’s a USB card that plugs into your laptop. It acts as a personal hotspot, and tethers your laptop on to the wireless provider. We keep a data card available on site, so it’s easy and not an issue our guests need to worry about. We keep plenty of data $ on the card but please, do not plan on downloading movies. We won’t pay for that. Another option is to purchase an international data package plan from your US provider. AT&T has an affordable plan and coverage is great. T-Mobile does not have good coverage at the resort. Your small pets are welcome if they travel with you! PLEASE NO SMOKERS
