The story behind Café 1820 begins long before the brand itself existed—it starts with a turning point in Costa Rica’s history.

🌱 Why “1820” Matters

The name “1820” refers to the year Costa Rica made its first known coffee export. At that time, coffee had only recently been introduced to the country, but it didn’t take long for people to realize its potential. That first shipment marked the moment Costa Rica stepped into the global coffee trade—and it set everything in motion.

🇨🇷 Coffee Becomes the “Golden Grain”

Throughout the 1800s, coffee transformed Costa Rica from a quiet, rural society into a growing economy with international connections. Farmers began planting coffee across the Central Valley, and the government even encouraged its production.

Profits from coffee helped build roads, ports, and railways. Entire communities grew around coffee farms, and over time, the crop became deeply tied to Costa Rican identity. It wasn’t just agriculture—it was the foundation of the country’s progress.

☕ The Rise of Café 1820

The Café 1820 brand came much later, created as a tribute to that historic year. Instead of representing a single farm or region, it was designed to capture the essence of Costa Rican coffee as a whole.

Over the decades, it became one of the most recognized and widely consumed coffees in the country. For many locals, it’s the everyday coffee—the one that’s always in the kitchen, ready to be shared.

🌄 A Blend of the Nation

What makes Café 1820 special is that it’s not tied to just one place. It blends beans from several of Costa Rica’s best-growing regions—areas known for rich volcanic soil, high elevations, and ideal climate.

The result is a smooth, balanced cup that reflects the country itself: approachable, flavorful, and consistent.

🌞 More Than a Cup of Coffee

Café 1820 represents something bigger than taste. It’s tied to morning routines, conversations on the porch, and that slow, easy rhythm of life Costa Rica is known for.

In a way, every cup connects back to that moment in 1820—when a small country discovered something that would shape its culture, economy, and identity for generations to come.
