🌴 What makes the Costa Ballena so special?

When I first arrived in Costa Rica, the rough dirt road between Quepos and Dominical could take nearly two hours to navigate. Uvita was a little rural town, and getting here was part of the adventure.

A lot has changed since then. But some of the very things that made this coastline difficult to develop are what make it so appealing today.

⚠️ THE OTHER SIDE OF CRIME IN COSTA RICA: SCAMS

Yesterday I posted a reel about crime in Costa Rica. Today, an interesting story crossed my screen that illustrates another part of the crime discussion that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

Scams.

And here's the interesting part: I actually know something about this particular case.

According to the linked news report, four Americans were arrested this week in Costa Rica in connection with an alleged $600,000 fraud involving a spiritual retreat operation, right here in my backyard of Pérez Zeledón. Among those arrested were Jonathan England and Melinda Hallman (aka Love England).

Those names immediately got my attention.

Several years ago, Jonathan and Melinda attempted to purchase a property I had listed here in Pérez Zeledón.

From early in the process, something about the situation didn't sit right with me, and I expressed those concerns to my seller.

Then something unusual happened.

A private investigator in the United States contacted me.

He told me that he had been hired to investigate England in connection with allegations from people in the United States and Europe who claimed they had been victimized. He had apparently seen information online connecting England to the purchase of this particular property, figured out that I was the listing agent, and contacted me.

I passed that information along to my seller.

Ultimately, the proposed purchase never closed.

Fast-forward to today, and I open the news to find Jonathan, Melinda and two others arrested in Costa Rica in connection with an alleged fraud involving a spiritual retreat.

Obviously, an arrest is not a conviction, and the allegations against these individuals will have to work their way through the Costa Rican legal system.

But there's a broader lesson here that I think is important—particularly for people relocating to Costa Rica.

🇨🇷 Not every person who might take advantage of you in Costa Rica is Costa Rican.

I've been here more than 25 years, and I've seen questionable characters arrive from North America, Europe and elsewhere. Sometimes foreigners lower their guard around other foreigners because they speak the same language, come from the same country, or seem to share the same worldview.

Don't.

Costa Rica doesn't magically suspend the rules of human nature.

And paradise can sometimes make people surprisingly willing to believe things they would question immediately back home. 🌴

Be particularly cautious about handing substantial amounts of money directly to someone in advance. Ask questions. Verify things independently. Use reputable attorneys and professionals when appropriate. And don't confuse charisma, spirituality, nationality, friendship—or a great story—with credibility.

Due diligence isn't cynicism.

It's common sense.

And you still need it in paradise. 🇨🇷
