6 years ago, moving my family to Costa Rica was just an idea.

We had a life in Canada. A house. Work. School. Friends. Routines. All the things that make you wonder if making a huge change is even realistic.

But we kept coming back to the same question:

**What if we actually did it?**

We weren't looking to retire. We weren't looking for a permanent vacation. We wanted a different lifestyle for our family.

More time outside. More time together. Less rushing around. Warm weather, beaches, new experiences, and the chance for our kids to grow up seeing a little more of the world.

So we started figuring it out one piece at a time.

Where would we live?
What would the kids do for school?
How much would it cost?
Could we work and build businesses here?
How does residency work?
What do you do about banking, vehicles, healthcare, phones, utilities, and all the everyday stuff nobody thinks about until they're actually moving?

There wasn't one big moment where suddenly everything made sense.

**We just kept solving the next problem.**

Eventually we stopped talking about moving to Costa Rica and actually moved our family here.

And yes, there were things we got wrong. Things that were harder than expected. Things we would absolutely do differently if we were starting again.

But that's also why I like talking to people who are considering making the move now.

I've been on the other side of that decision, sitting in Canada wondering:

**Could we actually do this?**

The answer for us was yes.

Costa Rica isn't perfect, and moving here isn't right for everyone. But changing your life usually starts long before you pack a suitcase.

It starts when you allow yourself to seriously consider that the life you're imagining might actually be possible. 🇨🇷

How Safe Is Guanacaste, Costa Rica?
One of the most common questions people ask before moving to or visiting Guanacaste is, “Is it safe?” The short answer is that Guanacaste is generally considered one of the safer regions in Costa Rica, but like anywhere in the world, common sense and good security habits are important.

Many people are drawn to Guanacaste because of its laid-back lifestyle, friendly communities, beautiful beaches, and outdoor activities. It’s common to see families walking around town, people enjoying sunset on the beach, and neighbors looking out for one another. Most visitors and residents go about their daily lives without experiencing any major issues.

Petty Crime Does Exist
The most common crimes in Guanacaste are crimes of opportunity, such as theft from vehicles, unattended belongings on the beach, and occasional house break-ins. Violent crime involving tourists and expats is relatively uncommon, but petty theft can happen if valuables are left visible or security is ignored.

Things I actually miss about Canada 🇨🇦

Since moving to Costa Rica, people always ask if I miss Canada.

Honestly… there are a few things.

🌅 Those long summer nights.
I didn’t realize how much I loved it staying light until 9:30 or 10 PM. Here, it’s dark around 6:30 EVERY SINGLE DAY. You really notice it!

🎬 Indoor activities when it rains.
We finally have a movie theatre in Tamarindo, which is amazing, but sometimes I just want to go bowling, wander around a mall, grab a coffee and shop… you know, those simple rainy-day activities you never think twice about in Canada.

🍂 Fall.
I definitely miss fall. The colours, the crisp air, cozy sweaters… all of it.
Fall, yes. Winter? Absolutely NOT. ❄️

🚗 A clean car.
This one sounds ridiculous until you live here.
Between the dirt roads, dust, rain and everything else, keeping a car CLEAN is basically a full-time job.

So yes, there are definitely things I miss about Canada.

But would I trade them for year-round warmth, the ocean, outdoor living and the lifestyle we have here?

Not a chance.

Sometimes you can miss parts of a place without missing the life you left behind.

August in Canada has always been a bit of a hit or miss with the weather, but for me, it was always a little depressing because, mentally, summer was already coming to an end.

The lake days, pool parties, backyard BBQs, evenings on the patio—they were all winding down. Before long, everyone was talking about back-to-school, fall, and getting ready for another long winter.

It was around that time I realized I wanted something different.

I didn’t want to spend most of the year looking forward to the few months I could truly enjoy being outside.

I wanted more sunshine. More time outdoors. More consistency. More life.

That realization eventually led me to Costa Rica.

Now, August doesn’t feel like the end of anything.

It’s another month of warm weather, beach sunsets, morning walks, outdoor workouts, and living the lifestyle I once only dreamed about.

If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering, “What if I lived somewhere warm year-round?” you’re probably not the only one.

Sometimes the life you’re dreaming about is more possible than you think.

We brought our cat Vida from Canada to Costa Rica, flying through Panama City on our way down — and honestly, the process went far smoother than we expected. The airline staff were accommodating, Vida handled the trip well, and we had zero issues entering Costa Rica.
