🌊 Today is Kataklysmos.

A public holiday unique to Cyprus, marked by seaside celebrations, music, traditional games, and the smell of freshly fried loukoumades.

Kataklysmos takes place 50 days after Orthodox Easter and coincides with the Day of the Holy Spirit. The name comes from the Greek word for “flood.”

The festival is linked to flood traditions that have been preserved on the island for centuries. Two stories are most often associated with it: the Biblical account of Noah, who survived the Great Flood in an ark, and the Greek myth of Deucalion, son of Prometheus, who survived a flood sent by Zeus. In both traditions, the flood marks the end of one era and the beginning of another.

Because of these associations, water became the central symbol of the holiday, representing purification, renewal, and new beginnings.

Cyprus is building and the numbers are hard to ignore.

According to the latest data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), 789 building permits were issued in January 2026, compared to 446 in January 2025 a 76.9% year-on-year increase.

The total value of authorised projects reached €445.2 million, up 92.9% from a year earlier, while the total authorised area rose 82.5% to 346,700 sq m.

Residential development remained the main driver of activity, accounting for €336.6 million in project value. The number of authorised housing units more than doubled, reaching 1,755 compared to 838 in January 2025.

Apartment developments recorded the sharpest increase, with authorised units rising by 135.9% (number of permits - 1.248 vs 529 units) year-on-year, while permits for single houses increased by 99.4% (number of permits - 329 vs 165).

Infrastructure-related activity also accelerated significantly. The value of civil engineering projects increased by 301.5%, reflecting stronger activity in utilities, infrastructure and engineering works.
At the same time, the Price Index of Construction Materials increased by 1.38% annually in April 2026, indicating relatively moderate construction cost growth despite elevated development activity.
The figures point to continued expansion in Cyprus’ construction sector and sustained development momentum entering 2026.
