💔On 24th July a huge wildfire swept across the foothills of Troodos mountains, destroying many homes and over 120 square kilometres of forest and land in its wake. Several villages (including Vouni) were evacuated, many people were injured and 2 sadly lost their lives. With extreme high winds and temperatures over 43 degrees the fire raged out of control for over 24 hours and is said to be the worst that Cyprus has ever seen. Thankfully everyone in the village got out in time and our guests, friends and loved ones are all fine…but it is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that the Balcony House didn’t survive the fire and is now nothing more than a burnt out shell💔 Over the years we’ve shared so many wonderful times there with friends and family, as have our lovely guests. We’re still coming to terms with what’s happened and can’t quite believe that it’s gone…. but we also know that it could have been so much worse so we’re thankful for that.
Whilst we are completely heartbroken, we were relieved to see that the majority of Vouni was left unscathed by the fire and feel truly blessed that the Lookout and Hideaway escaped having any damage from the fire, so all is not lost.
We would like to thank the brave firefighters and emergency services for their efforts in putting out the fire and getting everyone to safety. On a personal note, we would like to like to say the biggest thank you to all our friends, volunteers, helpers and people from the local community who have given their help to clear the rubble and debris from the Balcony House and supported us all through this difficult time, words can’t express the deep gratitude we feel for what you’ve done….THANK YOU ❤️ Our hearts go out to all those affected by this national disaster. Even though the landscape will be grey and charred for some time, the sun continues to shine and we, (together with the people of Cyprus) will be here to give you a warm welcome! ☀️💛
