A Futuristic American Dream on Wheels — The Western Clipper
Long before futuristic motorhomes became a thing, Brooks Stevens was imagining the automobile as something far more extraordinary.
Designed in the late 1930s by legendary American industrial designer Brooks Stevens, the Western Clipper was a remarkable “housecar” that looked like it had rolled straight out of the future. Its airplane-inspired observation cockpit, streamlined Art Deco bodywork and distinctive fin-tail styling gave it an unmistakable sense of motion—even while standing still.
Part automobile, part luxury living space and part aviation-inspired fantasy, the Western Clipper represented the bold optimism of pre-war America and Stevens’ belief that transportation could be both practical and spectacular.
Few vehicles of the era pushed the boundaries of design quite so dramatically.
